quick poll... last check up with my dr. i asked when we would set my goal weight?  his response was he doesn't set goal weights.  he said some people never get to it and others surpass it.  he said my body will know when to stop.

to have my bmi at healthy, my weight would need to be 136.  i weighed this much in 10th grade and not a minute later, so don't know how realistic that is for me.  i would feel comfortable between 145-150 (although would LOVE to be 136 again).  should i continue to work towards a goal or just let my body do the dropping and go along for the ride?

My doc didn't give me a number weight goal either. He says it is too soon that we can deal with that later. His "initial goal"  for me is a bmi of 29.9 (191 lbs). I know I won't be happy at that weight, so I'll be losing at least another 20 lbs. beyond that. My PCP wants me to be at about 180. I want to be back in the 165 to 170 range. I think with the sleeve I will be able to make my personal weight goals and maintain, if I abide by the rules.

Is this your surgeon or your primary care doc? I'd talk to the other one.

I would set a goal weight that is where you think you should be. If 145 is that weight, OK. My goal weight is slightly above normal BMI due to my large frame. I'll probably shoot to be below it so it is my ceiling weight.

Here's the thing: the loss can get to be a slog. Once you get to goal there's a tendency to relax. So set your goal where you want to end up and work toward that.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

it's my surgeon.  i see my primary in january but she'll probably say to refer to my surgeon for my final weight.  as long as i have a bmi under "obese" i'm happy. lol

Goal/no goal, a word is not going to determine your success. Your body will slow down and sit at the weight it wants to be whether you slapped the word "goal" on it or not. Setting benchmarks for success DO feel good, though. When you hit a milestone it's a great feeling to look at what you had marked down and say, I MADE IT! Some folks can hit 100 pounds lost in a few months. Some of us, it takes much longer because we started at a lower weight. You do what will make YOU feel happy and accomplished about your work.

My doctor's office takes the BMI chart and your height and says "this is where you should be to be healthy" - then they take your starting weight and deduct the two numbers - (for example, my start weight was 346, the BMI chart would have me between 159-164, they chose 159, said I was 187 lbs. overweight). Then they told me that their goal for me would be 70% of the excess weight of 187 which would put me at 200 lbs!! Not acceptable to me, I want to get down to at least 175 (my pediatrician told me when I was 17 yrs old that if I could maintain 170 lbs. for the rest of my life I would be doing great - taking into consideration height and frame, that was way before we listened to BMI charts as THE end-all)... so really if I got to 170 I would be so happy, but it would still not be 100% excess.

I do think it is important to set even small goals - when you see yourself hit one, move to the next, etc.

i set my own goal since my surgeon says he considers me successful if i lose 65%of my weight which would put me about 185. I know I can do better so for myself I set a goal of 130. I know I feel better and look healthy but not too skinny at that weight. Of course my body has had a mind of its own the last few years so will have to see where it settles in after the surgery. i'd say do what you feel comfortable with.

At about 6 months out, I had asked my doc what my goal was. He said he didnt' have one for me. At my one year appointment, he asked ME what my goal was. I picked 135, even though that is still slightly overweight. 125 would put me just under "normal" but I don't think that is realistic, knowing me and my body. Also, I dont think I'd look healthy at that low of a weight. So, 8-10 pounds to go and I'll be at what I feel is a healthy goal!

My surgeon is more interested in BMI and % body fat than he is a set weight.  I actually agree with that approach.
