VSG isn't magic (aka- still need to ban foods from home)

Well, this weekend I learned that, just like in my pre-op phase, there are certain foods that I can't have in my home anymore :(

I made a fantastic dessert to take to a friend's house (Sopapilla- basically cream cheese, sugar, butter, cinnamon and pastry), and we  had left overs.  Even though my calorie intake for the day was high (I had my first post-op margarita's), I couldn't stop myself from eating a nice, big 400+ calorie piece of Sopapilla that night.  It was calling my name.  It did not make me dump.  That stuff is going out of the house with my husband to work today!

This is the first time post-op that my mindful eating tools really failed me.  Even though I wasn't hungry, the call of the Sopapilla got me... This just goes to show me that I need to continue to NOT have certain foods in the house.  I can resist them fine outside of the home, but apparently my willpower gets too weak at home :(  The VSG is a great tool, but it won't work right if I don't do my part!!

It is true, I find that location specific temptations are difficult to resist. If I am at home there are certain things that I reach for that I would not outside of the house. If I am at work it is other things that I would not reach for at home and so on... Hmmm... time to make some lists and sanitize. You have given me a good idea! Thanks! That Sopapilla sounds amazing by the way - can you send me the recipe? I won't eat it.. I'll make it for others who can.

I have that same recipe (we call it sopapilla cheesecake) and it is wonderful.  I understand where you are coming from.  I only make it for parties and bring it in a disposable container so that I can leave the leftovers (if there are any) at the party with the host.  I find that if I make something that calls my name, I have to get it out of the house and leave it there.  Just plan for it not coming home or if you make something decadent for the family, make sure it's something that you really don't care about, but they like.  This is my tactic for handling decadence.  Good luck and good job for recognizing the weakness regarding this food.  You will find others that trigger you that way too. Just take note of them and keep them at an arms length.

My new philosophy is that if I have to bake for events then it has to be WHOLE pies, cakes etc.  NO cookies, brownies that I can cut and put on a platter -- if I do that too many end up in my mouth!  If I make a whole dessert or appetizer that would be ruined if I indulged ---that is the only way to stop my food addictive side from cheating.

Also - ice cream is forever banned from my house.   It used to be a staple -- not it is out of the house forever!

I have takento putting food labels on everything I make.  I love to cook and do it for others.  I find making the food helps kill the craving. Nthen I put a nutrition label on it to remind that a single cookie or bowl of pasta is an entire meals worth of calories with no protein in it for me.

Just remember, the spapilla didn't kill you, so don't kill yourself.  You still have done an amazing thing getting within 9 lbs of your goal.  Celebrate that instead of feeling guilty about a little slip up.

I hear you!!  I had a big relapse in 1995 and got back on the sugar after 9 years (it was piece of cheesecake - not sure why I still remember).  It took years to get off again, so that scared me pretty badl!  I had been clean for about 6 months in 2000 and was baking cookies for a school event for the kids.  I shoved a big hunk of cookie dough in my mouth.  Argh.  Took me til 2004 to get off again long-term but that's another story.

I decided then and there no more baking for me.  Every man has his price, and there are definite limits to my abilities to avoid eating sugar.  Baking is one of them.  I can walk past it when it's sitting there on the counter, but being up to my elbows in yummy fat and sugar is just too much for me.  I am glad some of you can still do it, seriously!  It was too much for me.

I hear you. THe garbage disposal is my best friend sometimes. When I find myself losing control of food (be it a sugary treat or just some dry cereal that I'm eating out of the box) in the disposal it goes! I feel a little guilty throwing away food, but I went through too much to lose this weight.

I am the same way. If I bake sweets for my family I always end up eating some. I have no self control when it comes to sweets.

Now, I don't keep none of that stuff in my house now.  If my family wants to enjoy sweets, they have to go out to a restuarant and get it.  Like Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queen or the local bakery.  It's more exciting for them to go to out to Dairy Queen and I don't have to be tempted by sweets sitting at home.

Even if you do cheat, being forced to drive all the way to a restuarant to enjoy a sweet, forces you to be a lot more mindful of what you are eating than just being steps away from your fridge.

Good Work!
