I am worried about getting my protein in post surgery because I really don't like any of the proteins that can be used for clear/thin fluids.  I am on them right now for pre op and this is what I've found:

I like the syntax nectar strawberry but only if I can use it with milk or in greek yogurt (which I can't do till week 2-4 weeks post op) and I get sick of the sweet taste (never thought I'd say that!)

the crystal sky nectar is just terrible to me even if I mix it in a crystal light.  Like, I literally have to plug my nose and I physically shudder at every sip.

The unjury chicken broth is better but I still don't love it. I will probably just live soley off of this during clear fluids stage to choke down the daily protein.

I hate the EAS shakes and have to just suffer through those.  I'm nauseated at just the thought.

I've been on my vitamins for a couple weeks now and I'm wondering about the first week post op when I can ONLY have clear fluids...do you have to get protein in that first week?  Will it cause problems if I JUST focus on liquids and go w/o the protein just for that one week? (specifically I'm worried about hair falling out) or is that actually all that matters, stay hydrated and getting the protein in week 2 and after?

I am trying to make sure I'm getting my protein in this week so I'm in better condition for post op in case I can't get it all in for several days.

Never thought I'd be looking forward to cottage cheese, greek yogurt, and string cheese so much in my LIFE!  ha ha

The most important thing is to stay hydrated!!!  But you need to drink some amount of protein everyday.  Your doctor will advice.  Also remember that your tastes may change after surgery and all of a sudden you'll start liking the drinks you have.

For me, I found a couple that I liked pre-op and even continued to like them 1-2 weeks post-op.  Then all of a sudden they were all making me nauseous.  I followed the advice on this board and kept trying different ones until I found one I liked.

You'll be fine.  Hang in there with the pre-op.  Believe me when I say it IS easier post-op!

I'm using a whey protein powder by Solgar mixed in water to get my protein this first week post-op.  I use two scoops instead of one in 8 oz of water so I get 40 g of protein.  It doesn't taste as good as when mixed with milk, but I find it more palatable than the isopure unflavored protein.  If necessary, I can tolerate the isopure unflavored mixed into a mix of Kool-Aid and Crystal Light.

When I go back to full liquids, the only pre-mixed protein drink that I honestly liked is a brand called Pure Protein shakes.  I don't have a Costco or Sam's near me so I haven't tried Premier shakes yet.  As much as possible, I'm going to mix my own using the protein powder since that's the taste I prefer.

In the first few days after surgery, my throat was so swollen that it was difficult to get enough liquids down using the tiniest of sips.  Now five days out I can swallow much more easily.  I keep fluids by my side all of the time.  Yesterday I got in 60 grams of protein and at least 72 ounces of fluids.  I think that's pretty good.  Today I'm aiming for the same amount of protein and even more fluid.

Each day will get better.  You'll see!

A lot of folks use the Isopure drinks from GNC during the clear liquids phase.  I did.  They tasted yucky to me unless I cut them 50/50 with water or crystal light.

I tried the EAS.  It was only tolerable.  I also tried Isopure and thought I would throw up.
Finally I found Premier Protein Shakes at Costco and SamsClub.  I really like both the
vanilla and the chocolate.  They were handing out samples the day I was there.  I also got
some of them for a friend, just out of her surgery, and she really found them to her liking.
I know a lot of people like Netar too, but I haven't tried it yet.

I completely get it! I am now 2 weeks post op and have not been getting my protein in. The clear stuff just sucks. My nutrisionist said to just stay hydrated that that was the most important thing. I carry a glass of diet lemonade all day and sip constantly. I've lost 23 lbs since beginning this process ( 8 pre surgery and 15 post) so I guess I'm doing ok. I can start on soft foods this week so it should get easier since I can have soup and eggs now.  I don't find myself hungry really, just craving more then anything. Just hang in there! The first 2 weeks are the toughest according everyone I've talked to.

I love the Isopure Dutch chocolate.  I mix in a tsp of Stevia and a tsp of cocoa powder.  I may be out of the ordinary because I really like protein shakes...well, some I don't like but Isopure I do.
