OH VSG position on plication
Wow.
After the new year, it seems like there's so many people asking about getting plication surgery. Today, one woman posted about having a banded-plication surgery!
I think it's getting to the point where we should type up a clear, well-written response with information and case studies, and then we could just copy and paste it each time someone comes along to ask about getting a cheapy plication.
Anyone else worried about people flying off to Mexico for the poor man's VSG?

I've never heard of banded plication surgery, but, and correct me if I'm wrong, with plication you still have the grehlin hormones and are likely to feel hungry even with the restriction. If this is true I would find it tortuous. A main reason I chose VSG was to be free from constantly feeling hungry and thinking about food. I'm newly sleeved but so far I never feel hungry and I definitely don't think about food every minute of the day anymore. It's been liberating in that way.

Yeah - that plication is bad news. Its right up there with the band, but even worse in my opinion. The problem with people chosing the band and plication is the fear of having the bariatric surgery being "permanent" . They feel they can have a backout plan if they don't like it or if it don't work for them. I can just remove the band or they can just unfold my stomach and I will be back to normal. The reality is that for one you will gain all the weight back. Two - the damage plication does to the stomach makes it most likely not reversable. Its basically FEAR that fuels people to make poor choices. Why wouldn't someone not want there surgery to be permanent? Just doesn't make sense to me. Not looking forward to hearing the nightmare stories about how plication has ruined peoples lifes. Hearing the band stories depresses me enough. And last but not least - If you don't kill the grehlin you will most likely fail.
I considered plication before I was approved for VSG, when I was still fighting w/ the insurance company and thought I was going to have to go the self-pay route. There was a group in a neighboring state offering plication for a reduced price. But, I agree w/ Maria: if all of the stomach is still there, just folded up on itself, then isn't ghrelin still produced? I asked this question and the office gave me a "BS" answer (actually they didn't answer it at all, which was another reason I didn't go that route). I am just over 2 months post-op and occasionally have "tinges" of hunger when the sleeve is very empty. Otherwise I am not interested in food at all. I guess we'll see what time brings, but overall I am very glad I had VSG and not plication.
