So I am 6 days post op, still on clears.  Doing well, haven't cheated at all before or after surgery.  It's tough and I'm proud of that.  BUT....

As I was setting up and decorating our pretty valentines table and putting some treats in glass candy dishes for decorations and for the kids to snack on, out of habit I grabbed 3 M&M's and tossed them in my mouth.  FIRST bite down I realized and was like, "Ahhhh!!!"  It tasted good in my mouth and decided to chew it up and then spit it out w/o swallowing anything.  It was actually quite satisfying.

I know it seems nasty but is this something I could possibly do here and there to satisfy a craving w/o swallowing the calories?

Is this a dangerous habit to get in?  I feel like it might be but at the same time, like I said, I was perfectly satisfied tasting it and then spitting it out.  Suprisingly, I didn't care if I swallowed or not. lol

What are your thoughts and has anyone else done this?

I was 1 week post opt for thanksgiving and still on liquids.  I wanted to taste the turkey so bad that I did just that.  I put a very small piece of turkey in my mouth and chewed and chewed and chewed till all the juice was gone and spit it right in the trash.  I didnt want the food, just the taste!  lol.

How very automatic it is for us to just pop it in our months and immediately remember we can't have that anymore. I thinks it was wise to spit it out. Now if you are asking is it ok to chew something like a whole meal and then spit it out? I don't know. I don't think there is harm in it, unless you have the kind of personality that can't just stop at one cookie. I imagine it could lead to eventually swallowing. Good Luck, Sharon

I admit, I'm a spitter too.  I used get these cravings for yeast rolls.  Well after spending weeks craving one, I thought maybe if I just chewed on one for a bit i'd be ok.  Since it wasn't actually eating it that I wanted, I just wanted the flavor.  So I did it.  And you know what, it wasn't what I remembered.  I did not swallow it, and I haven't craved them since.

I've done the same on several other things I used to like (but not candies since I know I can't trust myself on that).  They don't taste like I remember and so the cravings have gone away.  It's been a serious help for me personally.  Now, should everyone try this, probably not.  If you are a person that can get carried away eating something, it might be a slippery slope, but I knew that I had already developed the ability to control my eating since getting the sleeve, so I didn't feel too worried about it.  But it has done a wonder for my sanity.

Everyone has done it.  JUst be careful what you do it with.  Simple sugars are broken down by Salivary Amylase and can be absorbed that way.  You can take in some calories from tasting and spitting.  Probably not enough to damage your progress, unless you chew and spit an entire bag of M&M's LOL.

All through liquids My chew and Spit was Dill Pickles.

Everyone has not done it... I haven't done it.  I made that promise to myself a long time ago.  For me, I see it as a slippery slope to nowhere good.

To each their own, but for me, I am just not going there.

i haven't done it either and not going to. It is a slippery slope and I have enough trouble staying t the top of it as it is.

I may only be 2 months out but I sure haven't done it either. I thought about it once when I was at the movies and my mom was next to me eating popcorn. I wanted to put one piece on my tongue and just let it sit there but instead I just smelled the bag and I felt fine. I figure if I'm gonna chew it, I might as well swallow it. Maybe one day I'll have the urge to chew and spit but as of yet I sure haven't.
