Ok, so I tried my very first protein shake last night and it was utterly DISGUSTING! It tasted like milk of magnesia with a hint of chocolate! It was terrible! It was the Lean Protein 25 powder, chocolate flavor, from GNC. I also used milk instead of water for better taste, blended with ice, but it didn't help one bit. Not to mention that I'm not too good at drinking things that taste terrible; it will easily come back up. I really need some help and have just three questions:

Does all protein shakes taste that way and do I have to just stomach them??

Does anyone know an alternative powder that actually taste good?

Does anyone know any recipes to make the powders taste better?

Someone, PLEASE HELP, I'm freaking out! LBVS!

You have to try them until you find a good one!  I love the Nectar brand (powder.) The coffee flavored one is fantastic but I have yet to find a ready made one that tastes decent. Some of the stores (Whole Foods, Vitamin Shop, etc.) have sample packets so you dont have to commit to an enormus Jug before even tasting.

Hi, and I can totally relate! After my 2 week pre op diet of Glucerna shakes(which were pretty good and I enjoyed them), I believe I have been cured of my sweets addiction forever!!! For the clear liquid post of phase I found the Isopure Zero Carb drinks(not shakes-20 oz bottles, 40 g protein per bottle) were not bad-sort of like flavored water .Also, whey protein comes in unflavored poweder which can be mixed in food and drinks- I have just started using that (available at GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc), because I cannot tolerate any more sweets for a very long time. I hope this helps.

I love the Syntrax Nectar Chocolate Truffle. It has no protein taste at all and I'm pretty picky.

I found that I really like the priemier shakes from Costco.  I have the vanilla and it is pretty good.  I just order samples of teh necter shakes online because I see a lot of people on here raving about them.

Ditto that.  I DETEST protein shakes but I love the Syntrax Chocolate Truffle.  I make it with milk and heat in the microwave for a hot chocolate drink.  It tastes EXACTLY like Swiss Miss hot cocoa.  Good luck.

Premier protein chocolate is very good and I've recently tried Jay Robb Chocolate with almond milk and it is awesome!

There are better shakes out there than others.

For pre-mixed, ready to drink, Premier Protein shakes in Chocolate from Costco are tolerable and a staple during recovery because they are high protein.

I liked Celebrate Vitamins vanilla birthday cake ENS powder- you can request a free sample on their website to try. I mix it with milk and its yummy.

Over a year out I still drink a Click protein shake every morning for pleasure, in both the Mocha and Vanilla Latter flavors, 1 scoop mixed with a cup of skim milk and ice EVERY morning, it takes the place of a Starbucks but it isnt for those who are newly post op- Its got caffeine in it. Further down the road these are super yummy.

Try and remember, we arent drinking these shakes because they are the most delicious things in the world, try to keep in mind they are keeping us alive and from losing our hair because we need the nutrients in them post op. Its a necessary evil.

If you have any kind of vanilla protein powder you can make this shake, its freakin delicious!

"Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake"

1/4 cup pure canned pumpkin (found in the baking aisle, NOT pumpkin pie mix. Plain canned pumpkin)
1 cup skim milk or soy milk
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1/4 cup light cool whip
1 cup ice
2 single serve packets Splenda (or to your taste)
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground cloves

Blend and eat!
