lol it was so funny...she just went on and on about it!!! She was like you won't survive!!! hahahah! As if I didn't know that's how it was going to be...too funny!!!!
I get the same thing all the time - How can you survive on only 600 calories a day. No wonder- youre starving, and the like.
The answer is we prioritize what we eat to make sure our bodies get what they need and nothing we don't. Also, Thats all I CAN eat is a good answer too.

I did a diet before my surgery that only allowed me 500 calories a day. I remember the reactions of my friends, relatives and co-workers. They said that I was starving to death. If they only knew that the first week after surgery, I might have consumed 10 calories per day and that was from diet snapple and here beginning my 4th week, I'm consuming under 400 calories per day. Tell Mom, you as well as the rest of us are surviving.....lol
My standard answer is that the whole point is to use all my extra body fat for energy! And it is easy to get all my vitamins, minerals, and protein that I don't get from food with pills and supplements.
And as a side note, the really funny thing is that after my VSG, even while still on the liquid diet (so I was only getting 350-400 cal/day), I felt better and had more energy than I felt in so long. I really think it came from eliminating the processed carbs and subsequent blood sugar highs and lows. So not only did I survive, and still survive on 700-800 cal/day, I am actually THRIVING.

Its funny - when we are obese we make jokes like - yeah if there is a famine I could live off my fat for a year. The truth is you actually are! Living off your fat is whats keeping you alive. It takes way more than 600-800 calories just to stay alive so the body sees you have lots of fat and uses it for energy. The more energy your body uses the faster you lose the fat - simple as that. When you get to maintenance and run out of fat to live on you simply eat more often to get more calories in - not to mention you most likely will be able to eat more than 2 ounces later on.

Wow - i've already heard this and I'm still pre-op!
I'm forcing my mother to review all the documentation I have on how and what to eat post-op and she's freaking out. She tells me, "Of course you're going to lose a lot of weight on a liquid diet" and "No wonder you lose so much weight, you're starving yourself with these ridiculous portions!" and of course the inevitable, "Are you sure you wanna do this?" (with a condesending tone).
I just swallow down my pride, and breathe for a moment and re-think my answer otherwise something sarcastic and nasty will come out. LOL
Remind her that the portions and intake is being monitored by a doctor. They are the experts at this and if they say you can survive on 2oz of food (given you follow their instrutions), you should be fine.

I am 8 months post op and I am still getting the phone call's asking how I am doing and if I am eatting enough, and that I need to make sure that I am eating and that I am getting enough food, that there is no way I can survive on the amount of food I am allowed to eat. I am So glad that I live 1500 miles away from her because if I lived in the same town I would probably go crazy. I just have to keep telling her that I am fine and that she needs to realize that I get full a lot faster than everyone else and that the food's I am eating has a lot more nutrients and are actually better for me than most of the foods that she eats on a daily basis. Plus I also have to remind her of all the vitamins and nutrition classes that I take and go to on a regular basis.
