After VSG, did your taste buds change?

I'm only three weeks post-op, but I noticed a big one this week. I bought a pack of my very favorite gum - Orbit Sweet Mint - it's been my favorite for years. I put the first piece in my mouth and I thought I might vomit right there. It tastes so repulsive to me now. It's strange. I tried a couple more pieces at different times and had my husband check to make sure I didn't just get some rancid pack or something...he said it was great to him. Bummer. Now I"m on a hunt for new gum. :-)
Also, I am hungry still...that's not really gone away...but I have zero cravings for sweets. I had one mini dark chocolate chip and it was okay...but no part of me wanted more. I do however like saltier items I think...I am pretty sure I will have to watch out for that as time goes on.
I also don't like my vanilla protein drinks - that I loved before - now. Oh, but I like soy milk a lot whereas I didn't like it at all before and I had tried it many, many times.

Yes! My tastes have definitly changed. I tease people and tell them my 'new tummy is the boss and that I ALWAYS follow rule #1!' LOL! Used to prefer seafood to fish - now actually crave fish! Used to love fruits - they now taste super sweet and many cause indegestion - particularly grapes & citrus. Biggest change is that I crave much spicier and more highly seasoned food than I ever did before. Used to love mashed postatoes and mac n' cheese - but those taste sort of plain and feel very thick to me now so I pretty much stopped eating even a bite of them. Love nice grilled veggies and blackened fish. Have become a huge fan of peanuts and various nuts and popcorn for the great crunch and saltiness but chips and stuff sort of gross me out tasting 'greasy' to me.
Life will never be the same - what a great adventure to keep trying new things and watch yourself 'melt'!
Enjoy!!

I am 10 weeks out tomorrow and everything is different for me. I have the heightened sense of smell as well. My family laughs at me all the time for noticing smells before they do! I cannot tolerate many things I "loved" before surgery. I don't really have carb cravings(except for that special time of the month...the week before, really). I really enjoy meat quite a bit more than I did. I don't really miss veggies because when I eat them, they don't taste the same. I used to say that my old favorites didn't taste as good because the "love" was missing. I look at rolls and breads and think about how I used to crave them and I contemplate eating one every once in a while. I gave in once and had a bite; it was very disappointing and didn't settle well, so I know in my head they won't taste good and are a waste of "real estate". My tastes and smells may go back to "normal" one day, but so far its been very interesting

I don't think my taste buds changed, but I do think of t as almost going through infancy again. I developed new tastes. I think the process of going from liquids, to mushies, and back to solids allowed my body to actually like the taste of proteins instead of starches and sugars. If that will change when I can have potatoes and carby foods again, who knows. I kinda hope not.

I had no appetite, and no hunger for the first few months.. but my tastes stayed exactly the same. What I liked before, I still like, and what I didn't- still don't :)
I don't do sweets, save a bite of something really spectacular-home made if at a party or something if it's really worthy, and if I really want it, but it's one bite, not an entire slice anymore. Sweet does taste sweeter, but that's just because I don't get it often. I do find it easier to walk away from stuff, and my cravings are not nearly as intense as my pre-op days, though I still get them. My cravings though were usually savory, and still are.

Thanks to EVERYBODY for answering. I have had a lot going on and was reading the answers as they came in, but didn't take time to respond to them all.
I've done everything and am now waiting to see if the insurance company approves me for surgery or if they make me wait six months and do some sort of monitored weight loss program. Since I'm a Lifetime WW member among other things, and my gynecologist is writing a letter about all the stuff we'd talked about/done over the past seven years, we're hoping they approve me without that.
