Why-Loose Skin....???

I too am surprised at the "rather fat than skin" posts.. but they are few.. most seem to me OMG what can I do, rub, take to prevent this/fix this!?! or along those lines.. yes, when I lost it the first time I intellectually knew I wouldn't come out unscathed.. but I hadn't been looking around to compare myself online, I figured I wouldn't look the way I wanted to.. but I was wholly unprepared for what reality turned out to be.. We never let go of our mental image, until we actually come face to face with the truth.

And, I agree.. I would (now) rather be healthy and lean and melted like a candle vs fat and dying slowly.. but in my early 20's, I felt normal being fat, it's what I knew.. and it wasn't causing me any overt health issues yet despite being very very bad for me.. I was still young.

Now, as long as I wear elbow length tops and capris- no one can tell I was once really really big.. Yes, I am still bothered by it- and I yes, I want to be normal and wear tanks and stuff.. and this time around I AM, flappy wrinkled arms or not.. but the blase attitude I have about it currently came about with knowledge, years of acceptance (I should say- learning to accept) and experience, along with a good heaping scoop of I don't give a F what others think about me anymore. Earlier- no. I was a mess over it.. I had the body of an 80yr old and I was 23, and trying to date. It seemed like it was the death knell in my mind to all that- it wasn't.. and it was surprisingly, or not so- depending on your viewpoint, a non-issue to the men I dated. It only restrained me in that department, never them. I don't see many saying that morbid obesity is better than the skin, it's just the evil we know vs the one we don't.. it's human to freak about it a bit. If they are truly in that position mentally, they are not ready yet, and that isn't a bad thing either, everyone needs to find their own line in the sand.

Critical or not of Frisco's tone of this post, I have to say it opened up some great discussion.

I have lots of chuckers!!  I left 1/2 my suitcase in Spain last summer.  I love how much fits in a suitcase these days because everything is so small!

Frisco, are you coming to the Oakland film festival this weekend?

I've lost around 42% of my excess weight so far and I have NO loose skin.  I'm 33 and a male and have never really yo/yo dieted....just got bigger and bigger over the years.  I know genetics are a huge factor as well.

I was actually expecting to have some loose skin by this point...and am very happy that I don't.  Will I have it eventually?  Damn right I will.....there is NO way you can lose 170 lbs and not have any loose skin.  I don't think its physically possible.

Loose skin > being 350 lbs....any day of the year.

I didn't start to notice any  until I lost over 70 pounds.  For now, it is most noticable in the neck- doing my best turkey imiatation.  Now I am notcing it in the inner thigh and a tiny bit in the stomach.  But it doesn't bother me.  Anytime I feel a little bummed about it I think about how much more active and happy I already am, and I am not even that far along :)

Who ever posted that it has become more acceptable to be fat where they live....I wanna move there!!!   Because in the state I live in it is FAR from it!!!!   IF your not a size 0 your fat....it is the sad reality that this world has come to. I do have to say  even though I am FAR from a size 0....(really far...lol) I can say being 50 lbs over weight and not 150lbs feels pretty damn good =)

I probably live pretty close to you (SF Bay Area) and I feel the same way.  It's RARE to run into other fat people here.  There are few guys where I work that are maybe 30-40 lbs over weight but to see another obese person......its really not that common at least in N. Cal....I've never been down to LA but I would think it would be even worse down there.

It is very common to see overweight people where I live (Texas). When I'm "out and about" (at the mall, restaurants, swimming pool, etc.) it seems like almost half of the adults you see are overweight. That's certainly not science, but it does appear that a lot of people are struggling with their weight.

On the loose skin topic-I never thought it about it that much until I saw Kellawonda's (I think that's her name) youtube video about it. She was surprised at how much it bothered her. She said that it's frustrating because she feels like she really should buy a bigger size to accomodate the loose skin in her arms but then she feels like she's back to buying bigger clothes to cover herself up-like she did when she was heavy. She also said you do all of this work to get to your goal and you still have body image issues because of the skin.

My primary reason for wanting this surgery is to feel better and be healthy. But I also can't deny that I want to look better, too. I think that's just human nature.
