What to do when different doctors tell you to eat different things?

So my WLS team told me to eat everything ya'll are use to hearing- protein first, then a small amont of fruit or veggie knowing that it would be not typical to get that far.  Protein shakes, supplements, and meat.  Pretty much end of story.

I had a colonoscopy a couple days ago.  I am a cancer patient (skin) with a huge family history of cancer.  Everything came back good for the most part- no cancer, but a stern warning to eat fruits and veggies or risk some issues unrelated to cancer.  I explained that this was tough, but they said it was important.

So yesteday I decided I would make room for at least 1 cup of raw spinach and a cup of strawberries.  Today, can't even think about touching either one.  Struggling to get the protein minimum in.  Sigh.  Balance is important to me, and I hope eventually working in some fruit and vegetables will get easier.

That's hard to say since you are being asked to do this for other health reasons.  Did they say specifically what "other" issues, so you can maybe google it and see what they are talking about?  If it's fiber you can start adding that to your drinks.  Did you HAVE to have the colonoscopy for a specific reasons?  How are your bowel movements?

Well, I'm not a medical person, plus I am pre-op, but I've been trying to get creative with meals for DH who is sleeved. If you take lunch on the go, you could make the spinach the base for a salad with chicken, tuna, or shrimp. As for strawberries or other berries, what we do is crush them with a fork, add greek yogurt, then a little spenda or stevia as a snack. DH also adds a few frozen berries, cherries, banana chunks, or peach slices to his protein shake using the blender. He said it gives it some decent flavor and makes it more like a real smoothie. He also adds some fiber powder to the protein shake.  We haven't tried it yet, but we have some plain peanut butter powder that we will try mixing with a small amout of milk or water to kill any clumps, then add greek yogurt and use this as a dip for apple slices. I find great ideas on egg face's blog. Frisco also posts some great ideas for protein & veggie combos. I hope you find a way to work it out and still get that protein requirement met.

Can you, even temporarily, go back to getting some of your protein from shakes? Maybe blend some fruit in with a vanilla shake to make it more like a smoothie?

I'm sure you had already thought about that, I hope it didn't come across as super obvious. I just woke up from a nap, and I'm still a bit groggy haha

2 cups of produce could be tough fit.  Have you thought about juicing, or using a veg/fruit powder mixed into liquid?  I guess I'm wondering if they want you to get the enzymes and nutrients from the plants, or if it is a fiber thing?

Thaks for the suggestions, no idea why I didn't think about adding some berries to yogurt :)  I already use spinach as a base for a tuna salad- but it gets filling.  I still use protein shakes, and probably will continue long term and well into maintence.  They are just super convenient in the morning.  I am thinking I might need to up it to 2 shakes, as they do not hold me over as welll as dense protein.

Ms. Shell- I was pretty drugged when they explained it to me.  I am not able to pronounce nor spell what ever it was, lol.  My dyslexic DH has no idea.  It was nothing worrisome cancer related, but I am more prone to infections as a result of whatever it is.  The veggie and berries will help stave off infections.

Just tried kale chips for the first time- OMG are they good!  A total replacement for chips that is super healthy!  And it helps me get veggie in!

*edit- bm's are typically constipated and in need of regular colace and miralax inttervention.  Occasionally a little blood in the stool.

Look up green smoothies this will help with the green veggies to get them in. Dr Hollywood on here could most likely help you with what tastes good she is the one that I know this from.

I think it is a fiber thing, a scraping the colon thing??  I was pretty drugged at the time, so it is reallly fuzzy.

needs to be raw fruits and veggies...  juicing takes out the fiber and the "scraping" of the colon I would imagine.
