"Sleeve? No thanks, I'd rather lose weight "the right way"

So I still haven't told anyone close to me about my sleeve surgery.  I did tell an online friend about it because she's publicly struggling with her weight and saying she's going to try a certain program AGAIN and hopefully get the weight off because she's got diabetes.

I told her I know she didn't ask but I wanted to share with her about this surgery.  After giving a brief explanation of the sleeve and how I've had such an easy time of it she responded, "No thanks.  I'd rather lose weight *the right way*"  What  the heck?

Is there a WRONG way to lose weight?  I'm so sick of people looking down on those that get WLS and think of them as "less than."  I mean, at least we are actually doing something that have proven results and better statistics than this program, that program, this diet, that diet. There comes a time when an intelligent person says, "I've tried to get this weight off for twenty years and I've not been successful yet so chances are pretty low of being successful THIS time."

guess I just wanted to vent.  TOTALLY sealed the deal of why I won't be sharing this with any real-life friends.  People are so close-minded, especially because a best friends aun'ts cousin's mom almost died five times from WLS.  lol  I'm totally not bashing people that are NOT ready but those that are condescending about the *way* in which they lose weight vs a surgical loser.  So annoying!

You're right about that.... and that's exactly what I said to myself a year ago - that I failed to modulate my weight for two decades - and that's proof enough it's time for surgery.

There's always people like this.  You have to remember this is a bit of a defense mechanism on the subconscious level.  It goes like this - if I just diet, I can return to eating what I love later in the future.  But if I have surgery, the food choices are forced on me and I'm not yet ready to deal with that!  Even though I know I must lose weight and surgery gives the best chances, I'm going to label it as "the wrong way" so I can dismiss it and not feel bad about myself.  Remember, we all come to the surgery conclusion in our own times.  Two years ago I just wasn't ready yet.

Your friend will just have to watch you shrink and gain health and happiness.

Because I'm a technical kind of guy - of course there's lots of wrong ways to lose weight!  Starvation, for one.  Drugs like methamphetamine.  Amputation.  Altering the local gravitational constant of the universe.  To name a few.

I understand your friend because I felt that way for a long time. I can't even explain it really. It's like why can't you just put down the fuckn hamburger and get off your ass? People look at surgery like wow you're THAT pathetic that you can't just STOP eating? Get it together. Even though I was huge, I still felt that way about the surgery. Imagine how small people feel. I think as the surgery is more and more common, people are becoming more accepting of it in general but it is still frowned upon compared to the "normail" way of losing weight. Once surgery became completely neccessary and I felt like there wasn't an option I viewed the situation differently. People are going to frown on it regardless.

whats she gonna say when you are thin and she's failed yet again on some fad diet.  she'll probably have something snarky to say but hey, you will be THERE not her, so you got that lol.

Despite what we know and have experienced, weight loss surgery is still widely viewed as "the easy way out" by many people. They don't realize the enormous lifestyle change that is required to be successful.  At least you've given her food for thought and hopefully she's aware of these discussion boards if she wants to persue it in the future.

And if you get that kind of response in the future just say "This was the right way for me to be successful!" =)
