Pre-Op Diet -- Is this unusual?

I'll definitely be looking for a different protein source.  I did buy a 4-pack of Atkins but the flavor was yuck.  I need to find something I can stand to drink!  Thank you!

Mine was not a liquid diet. No carbs. 4 ounces of lean protien and 1/2 cup of veggies 3 times a day.1 ounce of nuts for a snack. 8 ounces of dairy and 1/2 cups of fruit twice a day. Fruit was omitted the last 5 days. I lost 15 pounds. I didn't ask him how my liver looked, but he did not complain after surgery.

Good luck to you!

There really is a lot of variation in pre-op diets, isn't there?  Congrats on your success!

Huge variation on what different surgeons require for pre-op diets. Someone else on a thread I was reading earlier was complaining that there should be a "gold standard" of pre-op diets, lol. Great idea but who knows if it would ever come to pass.

FWIW, mine is protein shakes (I use HMR) plus clear liquids. The only things I am allowed are broth or bouillion, sugar-free jello, sugar-free popsicles, decaf black coffee or tea, Gatorade G2, and V8 or tomato juice). Drinking a ton of water too, to balance the V8 and bouillon (both low-sodium, broth is fat-free).

I got the okay from my doctor to add a piece of chicken or some hard boiled eggwhites mid-day (this week only...not next week) if I'm feeling too light-headed or dying to chew something. Apparently my goal is not only to reduce fatty liver but also to lose an additional 10 lbs. (I asked for the eggwhites--they are good protein, no fat, and start out as clear liquids, lol.)

It's interesting to me that there are so many variations. It really makes me wonder where they get THEIR info, since they aren't nutritionists.

Good luck!

I will be following the same pre op diet.  Except my NUT told me to do 1 protien shake a day  (not slimfast though) and then the rest seems to be the same.  Lean meat and veggies. Dont remember the exact amounts.

I didn't remember the exact amounts either, and after I ate I checked and saw I was supposed to have 5 oz of meat instead of 3.  However, I'm letting it ride.  I ate the last of the Easter ham and that's not really a lean meat, I don't think!

I'm on 2 protein shakes and one high protein low carb meal a day.

Good luck.  I hope that works out well for you.  I assume it will since there are so many different combinations being shared here, and evidently they all work!

Like everyone has already stated, every doc is different. I was given a choice between two options. The first one similar to what you described and the second one was 3-4 protien shakes, 2 protien bars per day. I went with option 2 and today is day 2 of my pre-op diet. Try the Unjury shakes if you havent already. I am a really picky eater and dont like a lot of things but I like their vanilla flavor!
