Post-Op: Feeling queasy? Brush your teeth!
I had issues with nausea and queasiness (in addition to pain) for a couple of days post surgery, until I found a medication that dealt with the nausea. I got the foamies a few times the first day or two but managed not to totally lose it, but the nausea ebbed and tided.
Now that it's behind me, I look back into that hazy time of queasy pain, not getting enough to drink, just forcing myself through the motions and have had an "aha!" moment.
This would not have eliminated the nausea but it certainly would have helped:
I should have brushed my teeth after each dose of Lortab (liquid hydrocodone) and after each GasX strip, and each vanilla protein drink. What's more, I probably should have gone old school like my grandmother and brushed my teeth with nothing but baking soda, so I wouldn't have yet another strong mint-burny flavor duking it out in my mouth with the rest of the toxic tastes.
I think brushing my teeth--especially with baking soda--would have left my mouth feeling fresh, but not overloaded with tastes that were overloading my delicate tummy.
As it was, I just had layers of bad tastes in my mouth that never went away until I was a couple of days out, my nausea meds were working, and I was beginning to get back on my game. The Lortab was enough to clench my tummy and make me barf, working to sip it all down, and it coats the mouth and stays there. Same with the GasX strips, though at least you don't have to drink them. NOTHING is going to taste good on top of that coating of gunk.
I hope that helps somebody.
