Less than 20 carbs per day?

I'm a new sleever so am trying to assimilate so much info and sometimes get lost in it.

Many of you who are successful sleevers have mentioned keeping your carbs under 20 grams per day.

Does it make a difference where the carbs come from?  For example, I am craving the baby yellow squash coming out of my garden and according to my diet can purree them.  (Haven't yet, just bought my Magic Bullet.)  Since we're talking about almost 0 calories here and non starch, do these impact the big picture?  Are they to be as avoided as any carbs?

I have tried Almond Milk with my shakes and didn't like it.  So I'm still using milk.  Calorie wise, I'm doing great, staying around 600 calories or less per day.  But there are those carbs...

I'm asking for flame-free answers.  If you don't approve of going so low-carb, fine, but this is not a place to attack those who do.

I'm just trying to understand the process I am involved in.

Thank you!

If you have been cleared and can eat that squash and still meet your protein requirements (which is job number one along with fluids this early out) then it's fine but the squash will probably mean you have one less meal of protein.  Are you managing to get in your protein 80gms? Once i was cleared for all foods (6 weeks out) i incorporated a tablespoon of veg at every meal but protein first.  Also unless your doctor has limited you to 20 gms that's lower than most.  Most who low carb keep it between 30-40. Hope this helps.

I've been on full liquids for almost a week and have been getting all my protein for the past five or six days through shakes.  In fact, it's a little scary how easily everything goes down.

I've also had one or two SF popsicles a day and soup broth (though that had unflavored protein in it twice so was counted as a "shake" in my head, and I'm waiting for the cannister to come so I can do that every day).

What I'm not sure about is water/fluids.  I'm getting more than enough fluids down, but not as water until the past two days.

I'm feeling like a mutant that I am not having problems with this stuff, and am beginning to wonder if he left 85% of my stomach and only took 15%.  (Just kidding. Sort of.)

I didn't have any problems either.  no swelling.  But there was an adjustment when i went on mushies which stayed in my sleeve longer than shakes.  Here's my advice for what it's worth.  I'd wait on the veggies until you can incorporate it with full food, dense protein.  I in fact confronted my doctor because everything I'd read told me to expect to struggle with getting fluids in.  He told me what I'm going to tell you.  Give thanks.  I did have 2 really ugly episodes of projectile vomiting, one at 3 weeks, when i introduced yogurt and also when i had some tomato soup. They both took me days, more to get over the fear and shock of having them happen and the terror that I'd hurt my sleeve.  It was fine but I say this to say take it slow with new introductions, but to answer another question you had, i keep my carbs between 30-40 usually i hit below 30 but i have veggies in some form with every meal. It's important to me to feel balanced in my food.

I can't thank you enough for this advice.  OMG, the idea of projectile vomiting terrifies me, and I can see that for somebody like me who hasn't had many problems so far, there might be a complacency that leads to that, not just because of a particular food choice but simply because I get lax in some way.

Thank you.  I'm so sorry you had to through that, but as you say, I am thankful I can drink and get my proteins and fluids in right now, and that's a lot to be thankful for!

Once you start having solid food you will find the restriction greater. I can do lots of fluids but when it comes to my meat or veg , it seems much smaller portions.

Carbs that come with fiber are best. So I say squash is filled with lots of fiber, vitamins and stuff. Much better to get it from things like that. Same with milk. The worst carbs will. be the processed , white stuff.

Most people count net carbs ( total carbs minus fiber = net carbs ) I believe.

Oh!  I forgot about net carbs!  It has been so long since I did the Zone, and in fact if you'd said, "Plan this meal on the Zone," I would have subtracted the fiber w/o thinking!  But I hadn't connected the dots here.

Thank you!

It's individual.  Low carbing works very well for MOST people....but it is nearly a necessity for those with metabolic issues.

There are people out there who simply will not lose weight eating "normal" amounts of carbs.

If you don't have these issues then you can get away with eating higher amounts.....however I would caution.....that is not an excuse to eat crap.

Your carbs should come from vegetables, beans, fruit, etc.

I personally feel that grains (wheat, corn) have absolutely NO place in any healthy diet.  But that is just my opinion.......backed up with some scientific fact....but still an opinion.

I think your homemade squash sounds delicious and if its ok with your plan....go for it.  Just make sure you can get all your protein in FIRST....then have some squash.

EDIT:  Just wanted to add about the almond milk.  It's great for you....but it is an aquired taste.  Try Hood Calorie Countdown....there is only 3g carbs for 1 cup and it tastes and has a similar feel to regular milk.  I don't drink it now but have had it in the past and its not bad at all.

Thanks for all this information.  I'll definitely look for the Hood Calorie Countdown.

Those grains are what they use to fatten up cattle for the slaughter.  'Nuff said? We're on the same team, even though they have been my downfall since childhood.
