Diet Pepsi

Went for my 6 weeks checkup today.  Everything was fine and I've lost 42 lbs so far.  So, when the surgeon came in, he had a bottle of Diet Pepsi and I took the opportunity to ask him why I couldnt have pop (soda).  He said that it causes gas pains in some patients.  I told him that I had about 2 oz recently and it didn't bother me.  He said if it didn't bother my sleeve, it was fine occasionally and in moderation.  He went on to say I should never drink regular pop, but only diet  pop.  I asked if it would stretch my sleeve and he said, "no."
In no way am I encouraging others to partake, you should always ask your doctor.
I went straight to McDonalds and got a child size Diet Pepsi and I was in heaven!

My doctor had different reasoning.. saying it can harm your sleeve, especially recent post-op.. and can partake in causing ulcers, etc..

But I asked them because i had absolutely no problems, about 3 or 4 months out.. and they said as long asi took my zantac, its fine to have a little bit in moderation. i usually diluted it with some water at first. and i still do sometimes.

but i certainly don't drink it as often as i did pre-op. haha.

everyones doctors have different opinions on this topic.. along with a lot of other topics. lol

Carbonation is simply gas and per my surgeon, it's going to escape out one end or the other - not stretch the sleeve. That said, soda is incredibly unhealthy (diet or otherwise) and while it might not be too bad in moderation, so many people have soda addiction issues and it would be easy to fall back into old habits. I luckily never had any soda addiction issues, so very rarely I'll have a small soda or part of a can/bottle with no problems. I can take it or leave it, really.

I have personal experience with Diet Pepsi. Many years ago it began to eat a hole in my stomach (gastric ulcer). I had to take many medications for many weeks to fix the problem. It was painful too. So....no matter what others say it can or can't do, it can cause an ulcer and considering we don't have much stomach left that could be very detrimental.  Not worth the potential risk!

Other Ingredients in Diet Soda

Aspartame is a potent neurotoxin and caffeine is an addictive stimulant, but there are other chemicals in diet soda you should be aware of. Citric acid and artificial flavors may contain MSG, another neurotoxin that contains aspartic acid. Phosphoric acid, associated with calcium loss, gives diet soda that "bite". The synthetic additives acetic, fumaric, gluconic and phosphoric acids all elevate stomach acid levels, which may lead to gastric distress and erosion of the stomach lining -- especially if consumed on an empty stomach.
Diet soda is a dehydrating diuretic which hinders digestion. (reference 6)

I drank 2-3 two liter bottles of diet soda each day prior to surgery.  I'm pretty certain it is what led to me developing gout and severe arthritis in all my joints.

I cut it out cold turkey about a month before surgery.....before I even was a week out of surgery I had ZERO arthritis....and had not even dropped barely any weight yet.

Coincidence?  Maybe....but I'm willing to be money it was giving up soda and the crap in it.

There is nothing healthy in it and is an addictive substance.  I will not be touching it again whether a doctor says he thinks I can have it or not.

I was a 10-12 diet coke a day person. I cut it out before surger and avoid it like the plague. I gave up smoking but could not give up diet coke prior to surgery. I'm on 5 months without it and refuse to touch it. Diet Coke is my heroin. I can't even dabble!

I loved my diet coke with lime! I drank 6 cans a day prior to surgery but cut down to 1-3 a couple of weeks before my surgery. I had the WORST headache my second day post-op, it was worse than my belly pain. I know it is terrible for me and I don't ever want to touch it again!
