I've been hitting my protein and calories since Day 4.  And I've been trucking along, the same way I did the first couple of weeks, just working on getting everything in, until I realized--wait, I don't have to get 800 calories.  Duh!  Obviously I knew that before.  What I didn't understand was the benefit of taking advantage of the honeymoon to get less!
