7 Days Post-Op Update
VSG on 05/23/12
So it has been 7 days since my surgery and I just wanted to give a little update on how I have been doing.
I have not had all great days since surgery, I've had a few really bad days where my head hunger was out of control and the ability to take in my fluids and protein just seemed impossible no matter what I did. Thankfully those days have passed for now,
I had my first post-op appointment with the surgeon yesterday and I think that helped to improve my attitude as well because he reassured me that I was on the right track. First I was having some pain everytime I swallowed, even with the tiniest sips, I tried diffrent temps and adding crystal light and still had pain. The Dr. gave me a perscription for anti-spasm meds to help my esophagus from tightening when ever I am drinking. I took that yesterday and OMG what a help that was, getting fluid in today has been a breeze. I also told him that my energy had tanked within the last few days and he told me to move forward with the full liquid phase and increase my calories and I should see an increase in energy and again today I feel 100% better.
I haven't had any fever or pain since surgery and my incisions are healing well and he removed my sterile strips which is good because the adhesive has irritated my skin and caused it to itch like crazy so I got some lotion for that too.
The best news I recieved at my appointment was the fact that I lost 16 pounds in 1 week
I'm looking forward to the rest of this journey and to see what's lays ahead

You're doing great! It sounds like you have a good doctor, who listens to your concerns and finds solutions. :) I'm 3 weeks out today. Our journey is going to be soooo rewarding! BTW, my surgeon used some derma bond type stuff instead of steri strips. It just peels off like super glue.
In two decades I've lost a total of 789 pounds. I should be hanging from a charm bracelet. Erma Bombeck

Yes I have a great dr. he makes me feel confident in both him and this decision. My surgeon did use the derma bond as well but I guess the steri strips were for good measure. I think my skin reaction is something I'm gonna have to inform dr.s of in the future cause my skin has been having reactions a lot lately.
Congrats on your surgery and I hope your doing great as well!!

Could you tell me what the name of the med is your dr gave you for the spasm? I had my surgery on 5/15 and I developed a lactose intolerance from surgery. Every thing whey based upsets my tummy. Now it's gotten to the point where every thing I drink or eat bubbles up in my throat with such a vile taste it almost makes me throw up every time I sip even water. I'm definitely not getting enough fluid in....or protein either....but at this point I'm just doing what I can. It's been rough!! I did so well in the hospital and when I first got home....but it's gone down hill fast. I appreciate anything you can share!!

I'm sorry that you are going through this rough patch, the medicine that the doctor prescribed me is hyoscyamine. For the most part it has really helped but every now and then I still have tightness when I am swallowing. Maybe you can ask your doctor about that medicine to see if it can help with the issues you are having or if there is something else you can do. Hope you feel better!
