My pre-op drama. No smoking = Allergies? Ugg
I'm 40, I've never had allergies and I've lived in the south my whole life. So, now I quit smoking and all of the sudden I am overwhelmed with allergy symptoms. I can hardly make it through my work day because I am constantly sneezing, my nose runs like a faucet, and my eyes are always dripping. This has been going on for about a week now, and I'm less than a week till surgery. Oh lord, and don't even get me started on the cpap nightmare. I'm up all night sneezing, and its just a mess!
I made an appointment with an allergist for the day before surgery (soonest I could get in). I'll of course share this info with the surgeon, and vice versa. Should I call the surgeon now and tell him my problems, or just wait?
Ok so what I'm asking is this...
Those of you with allergy problems.. did you have a hard time getting meds in liquid form? Or do you just use the children's form? Did you have any problems taking them post op? Did your surgeon give you a hard time about taking them?

i have issues with my ear, were i start to retain fluid. haven't had a procedure to fix that since i found out shortly before my surgery about it.
anyway the fluid causes for me to have horrible vertigo. the only thing that works is benadryl. if i don't take it for about 3 or 4 days i start to feel the vertigo coming back.
my surgeon said i could take chldren's benadryl in liquid form for a while. i take it all the time for allergy symptoms, i know it makes people sleepy but i take it at night and since i take it almost daily (nightly) during allergy season, it helps me through out the day as well.

Hey Michelle...Its been awhile since I quit smoking but from what I can recall...I had very similiar symptoms to yours....I thought I was getting sick all the time. I was told that our bodies are in attack mode all the time because of the nicotine (a forein intruder) so our immune system is always in overdrive. When we quit, our body says, Oh...cool....VACATION!! so then our defenses our lowered.
Now, that may all be a bunch of crap..????... but this, I wholeheartedly believe in: take some probiotics to up your immune system. Still see the allerist but put it this way...the probiotics will only help for sure! Especially, after you have surgery...man, they are gonna fill you up with antibiotics and kill all your bacteria..good and bad.
Replace the good--probiotics every day, for life or for at least 14 days after your antibiotics are done.
I hope you feel back to your smiling self soon...allergies or whatever it is...is miserable.
