New to OH / Introduction
Hello All!
I am new here so wanted to reach out and say hello! I have been reading the boards for awhile and gathering information. After much thought and prayer I am having the VSG surgery on 6/11/12. I have been heavy my whole life. I never really thought about surgery until I was in a car accident on September 30th 2011. That day has changed my life forever. It was a "minor" accident but I ended up with a major injury. I had shattered my hip socket. The day of the accident the hospital sent me home with pain killers and crutches and said nothing was wrong. I was not in my home town so I went home and saw a local orthopedic doctor the following week. He gave me more meds and said if I didn't feel better in a week call him and he will schedule a MRI. I called him the following week and had an MRI the next day. Before I even made it home from the hospital they called and told me to go straight to the ER. After a week in skeletal traction they finally found a trauma doctor to do my surgery. They went in and put in 10 pins and plates and tried to put me back together. I am already developing arthritis and still have a pretty bad limp from all of this. I have been in physical therapy for 6 months and am finally walking with out any assistance.
Before all this I had lost 80 lbs all on my own. I was very active and actually enjoyed exercising and participating in 5K's and doing Zumba. Now that I can not do any of those things yet I see my weight creeping back up. My orthopedic recommend me looking into having the surgery and I thought he was crazy. He says if I don't lose a lot of my weight very quickly I will need a new hip sooner rather than later. I am trying to put off a hip replacement as long as possible. I am only 34 years old and way to young to have to go thru that yet. I went home and talked to my husband and decided I would at least explore the thought. I stumbled across this website and you wonderful people and again my life was changed. I have learned so much and have received so much encouragement from reading everything on here. You guys are AWESOME people!
I am super scared about my surgery on Monday. I have been trying my best to stick to the pre-op diet but have cheated a few times. I just don't know why I can't get my head back in the game like it was before the accident. I hope and pray this surgery changes my life and lets me get back to my old active self!!!
Take care all! I hope to make some life long friends here. Keep fighting the fight!

Welcome Stacy and thanks for posting!
Sorry to hear about your injury. You seem to be coping and dealing with it the best way you can which is all you can do.
I know it's a little nerve racking to think about surgery but it will be one of the best things you could do for yourself. Keep us posted!

WWBD?
Wow you've had a rough time. I'm glad your hip is healing. Dr. Teel is wonderful. He did my surgery two weeks ago. I'm already feeling better than I did before surgery. My knees don't hurt nearly as much as they did before surgery. Everyone at the hospital was very kind and helpful. If you have any questions: ask. The people on this website have all been there and will help you through. I hope all goes well with your surgery.
welcome to the boards and to posting here. you are going to do great with your surgery, just remember, at moments it can be tough, it will get easier and better.
as far as the injury and accident- there is a saying that you are stronger for having fallen and brushed yourself off and gotten back up than if you never fell to begin with. this will be your new fresh future and i am wishing you the mobility back that the weight gain and accident is restricting you.
chin up, youre gonna be great!
