I get sleeved in 2 days and I had a very dark/black stool. Research says this is due to blood in the stomach or esophogus (I have both esophogitis and gastritis). Has anyone gotten black stool during the high protein pre-op liquid diet phase? I hope this does not change my surgery date.
Talk to your surgeon ASAP....... you don't hide this kind of info......
Yes.... dark black usually means a bleed high in the intake track......
High Iron can turn it dark but not usually black......

Hi there - yes black poop can be an indication of a GI bleed but it something you ate or took (ie: iron pills) can make your poop black. The technical term is melena. Also the coffee ground look is if you vomit blood, your poop does not look like coffee grounds. There is a simple test to determine if it is blood it is called a guaiac test and can be done in the clinic. I do not think you need to run to the ER, but you can call your PCP.
Remain calm, it could be absolutely nothing. It would be much more concerning if you were have the toilet full of bright red blood. Still call your clinic and have it checked out.
