So today I went and watched my friends paddle board at a local park. I am 1.5 weeks post op so I couldn't go and I was fine. I had a blas****ching them. Then they were hungry. So I went with them and needed to eat. I stopped drinking and ordered apple sauce. It was weird ordering that lol. But it took 45 mins to get it. Yes they ordered food too. And I know it can take a while. But we were outside in the sun. What do you do? I was so thristy I took a few small sips of water, over the time it took to get food. Is that ok? How do you work around the not drinking but service takes forever! Just something I will get used to? I guss more so an issue when I can actually eat somthing. But just wondering how everyone deals with it.

I have always drank right up until the moment i eat.  Once I start eating though I cannot drink anything or I feel like vomiting..it truly hurts.  But for me, i didn't stop drinking any specific amount of time before eating.

Ditto.

I can drink right up until I take the first bite.  Then I stop and don't drink while I'm eating.  I usually wait somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour after eating because it feels uncomfortable to swallow water on top of dense protein.

ok....hang on here....does this "pain" you speak of when drinking while you eat or just after - does it stay like that forever?  or is it something that improves over time - and if so, how much time?  Just wonderin'

I'm assuming it will always be there.  I'm a little over 2 years postop and i still cannot drink for at least 20 minutes or so after eating..usually longer..or it literally hurts in my chest/throat area.  Feels like the food is stopping the liquid from going down..and by adding liquid everything will come back up.

Despite my program guidelines, I also drink right up until I start eating. I dont drink for 30 min after, but usually longer than that. A good meal with good protein seems to hang on longer tan that.

Hi there!

I have followed my surgeon's instructions for nothing to drink for 30 mins prior & at least 30 mins after. I do agree sometimes I wait 45 mins to 1 hour after to drink because I feel full from the protein. I don't want an uncomfortable feeling.
It really freaks out waitress's & waiters when I don't order a drink with my meal. I must have had to tell my hubbs this about fifty million times!!

I think it may be an individual thing !!
