Preop diet- Do I need to give up caffeine preop?

I am doing well on the preop diet. It is easier than I expected, but it is kind of surreal to not be eating any food. I have not given up caffeine though. I'm drinking some of the mio with caffeine. None of the information from my surgeon mentioned giving up caffeine.  My surgery is this Thursday. Do you think I need to be totally off caffeine before then? I am willing to do it, but since I can't have any painkillers in the week before surgery I know the headaches would be miserable.

 I would ask your doctor.

My group wanted me to give up caffine.  The reasoning it helps to dehdryate you, and post surgery you will have to be viligent about getting your liquids in.  Additionally, one side effect is acid issues- this did not happen for me, but it is common to take acid reducer and coffee does not help that situation.  I was very glad that I detoxed from the caffine prior to surgery- it helped me a lot as I am a total coffee addict.  After a couple weeks I started drinking decaf, so now I get my coffee fix and it counts toward fluids.  I don't miss the caffine at all.  On a very seldom occasion if I was unusually tired I would have a cup and it never seemed to bother the stomach.

Oh, about the headaches... when a headache comes on just have a very, very little caffine to take the edge off... keep cutting it back and you will be good as new in a few days.

My surgeon had me quit caffeine before surgery and for about the month after surgery.  He wanted me to be able to get my full 64 ounces of fluids in daily before resuming caffeine which took me about a month.

I was a very big diet Dr. Pepper drinker.  I switched to caffeine free before surgery and a couple of days prior to surgery stopped all soda.  I didn't really have any other caffeine prior (no chocolate, etc.)  It is probably a good idea to give it up as soon as you can.

Thanks for the tip Happy Teacher! I plan on having caffeine twice today, morning and afternoon, and then taper off over the next few days. The carb cravings are gone now so I can hopefully deal with the caffeine withdrawal easier.

The only problem with caffeine is it can dehydrate you.  So really you do want to give it up now.  Post-op your first focus will be staying hydrated and you don't need anything working against you.  I gave it up pre-op.

Yep...give it up. Besides, going through the withdrawal from carbs and caffeine all at once is a pain in the butt...but it is so much better to get through the most of it before surgery than to do it afterwards while trying to heal and change eating habits and more.

I just started having some caffeine a couple times a week in the past few weeks.

I've been slowly cutting back. I have half caf/ half decaf in my coffee each morning. At some point I will cut it to 1/4 caf. I'm hoping a slow adjustment will be less painful.

Give it up, even if your doctor doesn't make you. One of the things I'm most thankful I'm not addicted to anymore.

I was a diet coke junkie. I also gave up my cup of black coffee every morning. Gave it up the week before surgery. The caffeine withdrawals lasted through a week post-op. I figured I was already gonna feel not quite myself and by then I'd be on pain meds to make it through! lol

Every now and again I'll have a cup of decaf if I want the taste of coffee, but I drink stupid amounts of tea everyday. The tea I drink does have a small amount of caffeine in it, but not enough to have any effect.
