Another consideration -nsometimes the doctor cannot perform the RNY procedure due to organ limitations. Thats what happened to me. I woke up from surgery to hear I now had a sleeve. Looking back, I am glad it worked out that way. No dumping, no malabsorption & less problems than my friends *****ceived RNY. But this decision is one you need to make. Good luck on your journey ...
I have a very hard time understanding the reasoning behind getting the RNY. You have malabsorption of calories for about two years and malabsorbtion of vitamins and minerals for the rest of your life. There are so many possible complications that are associated with RNY down the road and the loss of the pyloric valve is a huge downside. I really don't know why someone would choose RNY at this time. At three years out, I am very happy with my sleeve and my maintenance. Good luck to you in making an informed choice.
Just had my sleeve a week ago today! I'm very happy with my choice. Still can't believe it has happened. I was so excited that this surgery is out there, I've never wanted the RNY. I never understood trying to get to health and lead a vital life by loosing the ability to absorb vital nutrients for LIFE. My anatomy (just smaller) and physiology has stayed the same. I am also in my early 30's and not sure what life has instore for me, I didn't want to limit any future medical care I may need due to a surgery that limits so much. The surgery may be "new" as a WLS but gastrecomies have been around for ages to treat cancer and ulcers. I think the RNY works for some, it's completely a personal choice...if I was in my 50's or 60's with major comorbidities, I'd probably choose the RYN. Good luck!
Well, here is one 60 year old person, who is choosing to have the sleeve done over the other options. I walked into the Bariatric Clinic planning to have the Lap Band. It was through the doctors' explaining to me why they felt that the sleeve was a better choice for me than the others, and believeme these doctors love the RNY, but I do believe the sleeve is getting be more accepted by the docors and the public due to the studies and exxperience with the outcome of the sleeve vs the other forms of WLS. the sleeve is the one that makes more sense than the rest. I will be sleeved on the 10th of July. It is right around the corner. I am grateful to all of the sleevers that on availible to answer questions and give good feedback. They are awesome!
i chose sleeve because i didn't want to be restricted from taking advil and i am older and didn't want malabsorbtion because I don't know what health issues i might have as i age. but my surgeon thinks that rny will gradually become a thing of the past. vsg seemed best to me and I am totally thrilled with it. my brothe and husband did it too. a three vsg family diane
This is a personal decision; HOWEVER....
One of my best friends had a gastric bypass 9 years ago. He lost a tremendous amount of weight (about 160 pounds) but has since put on about 30 pounds (not too bad...he still looks great).
He came to visit me in the hospital, and stated that he wished the sleeve was around (or popular) when he had his surgery; he said he would have chosen the sleeve over the RNY any day. There are less side effects with the sleeve--no rerouting of the stomach, no malabsorption, etc. and the recovery time was a lot less with the sleeve.
hope this helps.
