So..I don't know if there are any nuclear medicine techs out there but for anyone who can help me, nuclear medicine techs can't have any food or beverages in their working area due to handling the radiation. Once I have surgery and go back to work, how am I going to work all day and still be able to get in my protein and liquids? I only have a 30 minute lunch break all day. On slower days I can, of course, go to another room and take a few sips (which now, presurgery, is more like guzzles) but sometimes on a busy day I just keep running and barely have time to pee let alone drink. Any suggestions?

This is the reason why I stayed home for 5 weeks post op because I was worried about this. How soon are you going back to work and do you get 15 min breaks? If so then maybe you can plan do have a shake before work and one at lunch. If you have a nut maybe the two of you can come up w/ alternative plans so you can meet your protein goal. I just went back to work Friday after being out almost 6 wks and I am able to get in my protein and I have a very demanding job and sometimes I work 12 plus hrs

I work in a pharmaceutical compounding position - similar situation, but I work 10 hour shifts. I waited 6 weeks to go back to work (will be going back tomorrow) and I asked my surgeon that very question. He said ADA (American Disabilities Act) requires them to accommodate my eating schedule. I'm going back without restrictions to see if I can manage it, but if I'm struggling then he said to call and he'll write for accommodations that require them to give me 15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours to go eat.

I'm a nurse in a chemo infusion room with similar restrictions and schedule.  I understand busy.  Take as much time as you can after surgery,  I took 8 weeks.  I wanted to get into the normal eating routine and past activity restriction before i went back and it really helped.  As far as your work day, you are entitled to a 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon if you work at least 8 hours.  talk to your supervisor about your needs for short breaks and to maintain hydration.  See if you can get away on a regular basis to drink something.  You need to make it work because your physical needs won't change because you are busy.  I know it's really hard in the medical field, but it really comes down to you prioritizing your needs.  I'm a year out and I've made it work.  You can too.  I don't know if you plan to tell your boss what is going on, but it may help if they understand what is going on and what your needs are.  good luck!

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what they will do if I tell them I need 15 min breaks. I'm the only tech and at any given time we have 3 patients going. I would have to stop the whole schedule. But I guess that would be for them to figure out. Also, unless I wait until next year, this is unpaid time off because I only have one week vaca left and I think I will end up using it for preop doc visits. Well, I guess if its that important (and it is!) I will make it work. Thank you all for your input!
