so sorry to bring this up... anyone on here pass away???

We had asked my surgeon about that at his place. They had only had one person die that had to be included in their mortality rate but he had died in a car accident 5 days after surgery. There is something about if a patient dies within a certain amount of time after surgery (I think it was 30 days) no matter what the cause, they have to include it in their mortality rates. Seems kind of silly to me.

The statics I've heard in my research:

Morality rates:
RNY  and DS   1 in 200 average
VSG   1 in 400 average

Complications:
RNY and DS :  15 to 30% depending on skill of doctor and health of patient
VSG    4 to 10%  depending on skill of doctor and health of patient  ( of that worst complication being a leak which is 1%-3% depending on if it's a virgin sleeve or a revision)

This is just what I've read but I have no idea where the source was.

The doctor in Kaiser Honolulu clinic; had surgery, not sure if it was Rny or Sleeve.  She lost weight, and was doing well.  Then she had a bowel blockage, and died because she was on a plastic surgery rotation on the east coast but did not seek medical treatment.  That is the only one that I have knowledge of who died.

I remember hearing about that one.  I don't recall the type of surgery but the fact that she was a doctor and did NOT seek medical assistance.  Bizarre.

Not too long before I surgery there was a VSG death for a woman that went to Mexico. I can't remember the specifics but it was very very sad. I think she had other factors as well.

Look, the reality is that there is a risk with any surgery. Be smart, find the best doctor you can and follow all your pre-op instructions. I was terrified. It was my first surgery or hospital stay (besides 2 vaginal births for my kids!).

Guess what? I was fine.

Guess what? I was terrified again when I had emergency surgery for my ruptured disc in my neck in March.

Guess what? I was fine.

I was ALSO terrified when I had my uterine ablation surgery in June. I was fine.

LOL. But I followed the rules and I made sure to get the very best surgeons I could find.

 In one of the magazines at my surgeons office (I think it was called "Your Weight Matters" or something like that) it told of a beautiful young girl that had a VSG.  She lost her weight quickly just in time for her wedding (she looked like a model in the photos!).  Unfortunately, 2 months later, she died from malnutrition.  Don't know what foods she was eating or whether she was taking her vitamins but I'm guessing "not good foods" and "no".
