Popcorn and weight gain

So over the last 8 months I have had popcorn maybe 4 times.  3 times was the horrible movie popcorn and yesterday was homemade by my daughter with some butter and salt.  Each time I put on at least 1 pound.  From a caloric standpoint it is not possible, so there is just something about the popcorn itself.  Perhaps it is the salt, perhaps the boosted carbs that increases the glycogyn, but I just don't know for sure.  I do know I will probably spend 3-5 days to undo the pound if past experience predicts future outcomes.  Just thought I would share.   Oddly, this is the only food that I have noticed the gain with over the months.  Beef jerky if overdone will spike the weight a bit, but it is inconsistent compared to the popcorn and I attribute it all to the sodium given the low carb nature of the stuff.

Funny how we react differently to different foods, isn't it?

Popcorn doesn't seem to make me gain, but I can't eat just "x amount" of it. Popcorn and cinnamon roasted almonds are my two biggest trigger foods. I thought I could pop one of those mini 94% fat free bags and just eat half, and then save the other half for the next day, b/c that would have fit into my carbs for the day just fine... but no. That is one food where I have NO restraint lol.

Now, the cocoa roast almonds, which I actually like better than the cinnamon ones? Portion control no problems.

Go figure.

Popcorn is my favorite pre-sleeved life food.  I used to have a GIANT bowl every single night.

I have had it a few times since surgery - but I always have air-popped.  I haven't noticed a weight gain with it (although it certainly doesn't help with weight loss).  I do know that a lot of people say it's a slider food and they can eat pretty much unlimited amounts.  Assuming you are measuring your portions, I would guess the sodium might be the culprit in causing weight gain.

Have you ever tried it air popped?  (Some people can't stand air-popped popcorn, but I like it when I am just craving a light crunch, and I've learned to appreciate the subtle nutty taste.)

It's good that you are keeping track of everything closely enough that you know popcorn does this to you!

It's the salt, both the salt in the butter and the salt that is added, could contribute to the overnight weight gain.

You are LUCKY it's just 1 pound.  My body is extremely sensitive to popcorn.  I have had movie popcorn and gained 5-10lbs over night.  I have officially "tested" it out and it's from popcorn, kernal corn, grits, tortillas.  ALL corn products make me swell.

Corn does me the EXACT same way!! I can eat potato chips with salsa with no issue, but swap it out for a corn chip and I'm on the gaining side of things. Corn of any kind bothers me, digestively speaking ;)

Hmmm... that is very interesting Ms. Shell.  I never considered corn as the cultprit for some reason.  Once I read your post I realize that I have not been eating any corn products except for maybe a tablespoon or so of grits a few different times.  Thanks for posting :)

Yeah I think it's because I'm more in tune with my body right now that I started paying attention.  I even had a recipe that called for one can of corn (in a pot of chili) I noticed that on the days I ate the chili I etiher gained a pound or didn't lose.  It has been quite interesting to say the least.

Oh and soy products do it to me as well.  Not nearly as drastic, but still fluctuations.
