yes, I have gallstones.  So they will remove my gallbladder during the VSG surgery.

The Gallbladder is connected directly underneath the liver.  That is why I said that.  The general consensus is that the preop diets are to make the liver smaller, thus making it easier for the dr. to move around in there...right?

I believe so as well as  it helps liver function.
So your liver is not under so much stress.

Mine was 3 weeks of absolutely no starches.  No bread, grain, rice, pasta, or potatoes.  That was it.  I drank a couple protein shakes a day and had meat, fruit, and veggies for dinner.  It wasn't easy, I actually had a "carb crash" when my body went through carb withdrawals.  But it was only hard because I was constantly hungry.

Doctors very on pre-op diets like they vary on their color choice in underwear.....

Why?  Simple - their personal experience in surgery.

Some want a liquid diet to shrink the liver as small as possible - to minimize risk of damage as they move/work under it.

Other docs have not had problems with moving livers and/or working under them, so they aren't as restrictive.

Some docs make liquids a requirement so you're not dehydrated going into surgery.  Some also want the intensitines empty (especially for RNY and DS work.

And if docs do RNY and DS along with the sleeve, they keep consistant messages with no sloids x days....

Also, remember - no red/purple stuff 2 days before surgery - the colors also dye your insides and docs sometimes can't tell if it's dye or blood....be forewarned!

No pre op diet requirements for me - only nothing by mouth after 10 p.m. the night before surgery. I asked all kinds of questions about the liver and my doctor said he is very much able to navigate a fatty liver so not to worry. I am 3 weeks pre op and I am thinking about decarbing myself now rather than post op - so that I am used to it by the time I am out of surgery. But no, couldn't do a 2 weeks liquid diet! No way. That would be a deal breaker for me in the choice of surgeons.
