Rice and Beans

We are Cuban and Italian in my house and it was goodbye to rice and pasta (and bread for that matter) since surgery. I rarely miss them and that's the good news. My partner eats rice almost every night and I thought it would make me crazy but it doesn't, I'm fine and just happy the scale keeps moving down. As for beans, I do eat them but I always combine them with some other type of protein...shrimp, fish, chicken even a little pork. I only can eat a few ounces so a good sized spoonful of meat and a spoonful of beans is enough, 2-3 ounces most days.

I know it's not the same but you could try quinoa and beans once in awhile. The quinoa is a grain but has protein in it, it might give you the same type of flavor.

I feel you on this! I'm Puerto Rican and giving up rice was easily the hardest thing for me to change or give up as part of this new lifestyle. I tell you what though once I gave it up along with the few other carb loaded foods (pasta, bread, etc.) that I enjoyed, the weight just started falling off so I'll take that trade-off any day of the week. LOL!

Like others have said, you may be able to eat some later in the maintence stage. I don't think I will since I've done pretty well without it so far although it did take some time.

Best of luck to you! -Larry

Hey fellow PR! Rice and beans just runs through our blood huh???

To the OP, you will get used to not having carbs and eventually you won't really want the rice or beans for a while. As you test the waters and try them out, you'll start to crave them though so it's best to just stay away. Trust me, I know from experience.

I'm American. French fries, soda and hamburgers were a staple in my life.

Now, they aren't. Guess what? I don't starve.

Doesn't matter what nationality you are.

Making healthy food choices will get you to your goal.

Wow....Brazilian..... that is one I haven't heard yet......

Every so often here or at group.......someone starts out by saying.......Ya know......I'm Italian......

We eat...... and we eat Pasta..... that's my culture.... that's what we do.......

I always have to chime in and call them out..... My response is (I'm Asian)

"Do you think Pasta and Bread is more important to you and your culture than Rice and Noodles is to mine????"

The thing is EVERY Culture has a Carb Staple in there diet of some sort.......

And we as Americas/Humans...... We embrace foods of all cultures !!!!

Yes..... I make a mean Pasta...... Awesome Fried Rice...... Love me some Naan Bread......haven't found a fried bread that I didn't like......I'm from San Fran...... Home of the Sourdough Bread.....

That all said.......I stayed away from all that stuff during WL.......and now enjoy it in limited/enjoyable portions in maintenance.......

Lose the weight first..... than in maintenance find your limits and tolerances.......

I see more people trying to push the carbs and be that person that can lose the weight without carb restriction only to find out it wasn't so........waste of time.......

I want to make something clear. I'm not saying I couldn't give it up. I'm just checking from those who have had that as a staple in their diet due to nationality ever occasionally have it or is it gone forever. Thank you all who gave feedback without attacks.

Ok, so I responded to this thread and came back to read and saw that you just said there were attacks? I just read EVERY SINGLE response and there wasn't even a rude comment made. ONE comment could be taken either way  but everything else was actually really nice. You are being WAY dramatic calling any of this an attack and if you think these are attacks you might want to just lurk because this right here was sunshine and rainbows. Are you having a bad day or something? WTF.

Not looking for rainbows but I was looking for an answer to my question that I honestly did not know about. You are right most of the answers were nice.
