PCOS and VSG

I know there are several here that have PCOS and had the VSG.  My question is this:  did anyone continue on metformin after surgery?

Metformin is used to treat PCOS even if your fasting blood sugars are good.  I'm wondering if anyone (nondiabetic) stayed on it after surgery and if that helped with the weight loss.  My surgeon took me off of it, but I think he may have been thinking of it as a diabetic med and not as a PCOS treatment.  Wondering if I should go back on it.

I have an appt with my PCP in a couple of weeks.  Anxious to see what my blood sugar and insulin levels come back as.  If the insulin is still high, I might have to go back on a dose of the metformin.  Surely my insulin is low with the low carbing we do, but you never know.  PCOS  is a *****

Ha! PCOS is the ultimate *****!

I don't have any answers for you, but I am curious as I take Metformin for my PCOS as well.

Good luck regardless and you are doing a fantastic job with your weight loss!

I can honestly say that since my surgery and weight loss, my PCOS has gotten extremely better -- so much so that my OB/GYN is watching me very closely not to get pregnant -- we had to do fertility for both of my children.  She and the reg physician said that weight loss can reverse the PCOS -- they will still monitor but I am off of all meds for this.  The meds did help with weight loss, but it was dropping sugars too low and was putting me at other risks.   I am sure each person is different, but I can honestly say I feel great -- NOW on that note, it I eat something that isn't good for me i feel like crap and sluggish -- all in what works for you -- you will learn very quickly -- I could not take my medicine after my surgery bc of the size and having reflux.  When that cleared up we slowly started on the lowest dose and i was vomitting it up (sorry so graphic) because it was dropping my levels too fast ..  I was taking 50 mg and getting sick -- know this though, before my surgery I was on 2000 mg per day of the met.   keep us posted and good luck

Do you see an endocrinologist for your pcos?

I was taken off my metformin during the preop liquid diet and stopped the spiro the day of surgery. I'm worried about hair loss, but don't want to take a diuretic when I'm so newly post op.

Hey there! I stopped Metformin before surgery. They wanted to see how I do with out it. One week after surgery my pancreas starting functioning more normally, so honestly I don't think I'll need it again but they are going to check on that stuff again next week. This makes me SUPER happy! :)

Oh and PS. I HATE PCOS, it has messed with my life and caused me to be infertile among other things! Thank God for my sleeve!! It's giving me a life again!! :) Good luck to you!!

I took metformin for PCOS, while trying to conceive, during fertility treatments and while pregnant. Once I had my son, my OB told me to stop taking them. I haven't been on them since. I never had issues with blood sugars before metformin or while on metformin. I did develop gestational diabetes around 33 weeks but even then I never had blood sugar issues.

I stopped Metformin before surgery, I'm almost 11 months out and haven't had any need for it. My period is normal for the first time in my life and the other issues I faced are minimal now.

i have PCOS. I took metformin before surgery and haven't taken it since before surgery. My periods are getting more normal and I havent had any problems not losing weight. I can't say I lose as fast as most, but it's steady and way faster than before surgery. I haven't had any blood work since surgery and I'm curious to see how everything has improved.
