Anyone change his or her mind?

I'm midway into the insurance approval process for RNY, but the more research I do, the more I think the sleeve might be a better option. I had chosen RNY because I have PCOS and am mildly insulin resistant, and I wanted to do everything I could to avoid diabetes. But, the sleeve outcomes are looking good on that front, too. Did anyone else change their mind about surgeries at this point in the process? Thanks!

I was going to have RNY but my surgeon switched practices and my new surgeon thought VSG would be better for me for many reasons. I'm so thankful he recommended VSG.

Five years ago I was approved for the RnY and got the call for my pre op testing and just never went. Something in me stopped me. I then put the idea of WLS on the back burner and restarted the process again a year and a few months ago when I was dx'ed with diabetes. This was the last proverbial straw. I went to see surgeons locally and they were very RnY inclined. One actually shouted at me when I challenged him on the issues with the RnY that I was ot comfortable with. It was only when researching and reading OH that I discovered the sleeve....and then found Dr Gagner. Best decision of my life. Diabetes is in remission since three days post op...before I lost any weight at all. So don't let anyone tell you that the VSG is only restrictive. It is also metabolic. And it offers great control and quality of life including enjoyment of high quality small quantities of food, more pleasure than ever before!

I had actually planned on getting the band but then I talked to a friend of mine that works for a bariatric surgeon.  She suggested looking into the sleeve and I found it to have fewer complications than RNY and better long term results than the band.  I'm scheduled next Wednesday!!

I was going to have RNY and changed my mind just weeks before the surgery.  I was afraid of all the complications that can come long term with RNY.  The more research I did, the more the sleeve looked practical to me.  That is what I went with.  I am not insulin dependent but my DM has resolved.

I was halfway through my supervised weight loss to vsg. I was so gun hoe for the band and after doing extensive research I went with the sleeve.

My decision was changed for me...and I am so lucky it was!!! I prepared for over 2 yrs for RNY...there was no wavering. I read, talked to people...had some lifestyle changes to make to be sure I could succeed after WLS. Then I did all the pre op testing. The VERY LAST test showed polyps in a place that my surgeon said I was not able to have RNY and now needed to look at VSG or the band. When I began my journey...the sleeve hadn't been approved by my insurance co...so I knew nothing. I was SOOOOOOO angry!!! I came here to OH for the first time and came to this forum and I was hooked!! So many posters were positive, informative and supportive. The very wise Elena_7 ( I hope I spelled her name right!!) posted to me that I might be the luckiest person on the board...!! Well it turned out ...I WAS!! I had my VSG 3 short weeks later...and I LOVE MY SLEEVE!!!

Keep investigating...and you'll know what's right for you. Whatever you decide...YAY YOU!!!

I changed twice and was told if I changed again they would deny me (I didn't really, but was put in for changes.)  I was approved for the band(the surgeon put it in before I made up my mine.) I put in for the RNY.   I wanted the sleeve which they didn't cover.  So settled for the band one week before surgery.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Thanks, everyone. I think I'm going to speak to my surgeons office tomorrow about switching.

I have PCOS as well and I am getting the sleeve on 12/7. I don't believe I am insulin resistant though, I wouldn't know. I did take Metformin forever which it did nothing in my opinion. I like the idea of having at least 20-25% of my stomach left over, not having my guts rearranged or having the old stomach left in my body. I don't know why that weirds me out so much, but it does.

Maybe you should talk to your surgeon about the differences and see which is really better for you.

Good luck!
