For me the out of pocket cost in VA was much higher, 23-25k. I had mine with Dr. Alvarez as well, great experience. He has done thousands of surgeries, and has been internationally trained. WLS should be less about the cost and more about the Doctor, but you cannot pay what you do not have. Check my profile, I posted in my blog about my experience, and have a recommendation for Dr. Alvarez. I also recommend finding a dr who will do follow up here in the states, many will not. Get a nutritionist and attend a local support group... It is the after care that helps you on your journey, but the surgery should be done by a well trained, competent surgeon, which Dr. Alvarez is.

A side note of observation... I saw Dr. Alvarez not less than 2x per day while in the hospital... And he personally went over my medication and follow up instructions with me. I was also given his cell # & email if I have issues. I have heard so many in the US say they did not talk to the doc after surgery, and do not see them except maybe for brief minutes on follow ups, just the rest if the team. I think my aftercare was more personal than it might have been in the US!

I had surgery in July with Dr. Ramos Kelly. He was great. I posted my experience in my blog and on the mexico forum.

Ok I did tons of research even my weight loss doctor helped me he say a story in news week about Dr Aceves did his research and told me to go to him.
He was not the cheapest 8,500 but I am SO happy I used him!!!!
He is the kindest man!!! Very serious and passionate about his work!!!

The other docs were great!!
The anesthesiologist was AWESOME!!!
He explained EVERY step!!!

My pcp said she would see me for follow ups... Plus Dr Aceves is avail and willing to talk to any of your doctors!!!

He also gives you ex rays and charts for you to take with you!!!!

Another Dr Aceves fan here. Mexicali is very safe (only 1 drug cartel, so no fighting) the care I got was top notch and Dr Aceves' entire team is just wonderful. Most of the nurses have limited English, but they give you a cheat sheet of things you may need to say with translations and google translate helps with anything else.
