We are not on the Atkins diet. We are not necessarily low carb. We are High Protein (or protein first) which given our stomach sizes makes us inherently low carb. We do know sugar as bad for weight loss so we avoid that too.

Most certainly that is the case - we have our protein minima and then whatever is leftover leaves us inherently low carb and low fat, assuming any reasonable calorie count consistent with weight loss. Some, however, do go to extremes on trying to keep their carbs below some published threshold, with some going even farther in depriving themselves of some essentials such as dietary fiber in order to hit a bogey, or some fraction thereof under the pretense that some macronutrients are inherently "evil". I generally worked to maintain a reasonable balance beyond the basic protein levels, concentrating more on micronutrients than the macro classes, was typically in the 80-100 g carb range throughout the loss period - and the fat burned off just fine. Some simple sugars are unavoidable if one is looking at the total nutritional picture, but their negative effects can be damped out by burying them in with proteins and fats to keep the total glycemic index of a meal on the low side. Contrary to some of Elina's postings, one doesn't need to be a 2+ hour a day gymrat or athlete to benefit from a reasonably balanced weightloss diet.

I also have severe math allergies...but what I DO know, is my Surgeon, ( the most successful one in RI...yes a small state...but VERY large WLS community) NEVER talks much abt the carbs. The focus is protein, protein and more protein. The other  mantra preached in his practice is the "5 and 5"...nothing we eat should contain more than 5 G of fat or 5 G of sugar. Now with that said...that's ADDED sugar. So the puree stage...the focus was baby food fruits...that's the natural sugar...none added.

My results have been great...72 lbs down in total since prior to pre-op diet. I don't feel deprived...and I love my sleeve!

I love getting new info here on OH!!
