Vegan diet?

Don't confuse lack of compassion with telling people the hard truths about their chosen behaviors.  Sometime a critical observation that incites a patient to positive change is the most compassionate thing you can do.

I hope you don't get discouraged by reading some of the answers above.  I'm still pre-op (surgery on Jan. 21), and want to eventually follow the vegan diet, in the likes of Forks Over Knives, Dr. McDugall, or Dr. Campbell.  However, I think I'll stick to the safe side and follow my doctor's orders and do the whey or egg protein shakes just to get my necessary proteins in.  Once closer to maintenance, I plan to substitute my proteins with some veggie options like soy (small amounts) and seitan.  I've been vegan before and have done very well on a lower protein diet.  In fact, my health improved a great deal (reversed pre-diabetes and blood pressure and cholesterol went down to normal).  But, I still ate too many simple carbs.  Bread is a b*tch.

I will never buy into the idea that a diet high in animal protein is good for you.  And ketosis is great for weight loss, but your kidneys eventually suffer, long-term.   I think you should speak to your doctor about it, or find a nutritionist who specializes with a vegan diet.  It's doable, although we'll have to work harder and smarter, in my humble opinion.

Thank you so much for your opinion. I just recently watched forks over knives, and that is exactly why I was interested in others experiences. Thats a good idea to try vegan closer to maintenance.

Double thumbs up to you. To those of us who believe in the value of a whole food/ vegan diet - AND need VSG there are no easy answers.

Heres gonna be the hard part.... and of course a few will be exceptions.....

It's a double edge sword..... Carbs stimulate hunger.....dense proteins are the best at closing your Pyloric Valve so you have a longer duration of satiety. Carb eaters can get hungry every hour.......

The VSG as a WLS has several components..... a main component would be restriction.....by not eating dense proteins that stimulate restriction..... you severely reduce the effectiveness of that main component.

I am not without compassion, but as an ICU nurse...most of my patients arrive in a do or die position.  I will save your life...and little of my life saving skills involve my compassion.  Generally, my patient is unconscious.  They will die if I do not intervene.  I am there to give compressions, administer drugs to start your heart, and insert a tube to breathe for you when your lungs fail.

Can you do a vegetarian diet instead? I would think a vegan diet would be beyond difficult. The maintenance diet for life after vsg is low carb and high protein. I also heard soy protein only is bad for you in the long term. Whey and egg protein are huge supplements, especially early out. Talk to a nutritionist to see how you can get 65-75g of protein and 25-30g of carbs daily on a vegan diet alone. I'm pretty sure its near impossible. Btw I'm 8 weeks out tomorrow and th e only vegetable I've had so far is broccoli and romaine lettuce in very tiny quantities.

Wow I am shocked and amazed at how rude and assumptious people can be. I have found this board to be of great help, but clearly it as has those who'd like to be on the narrow minded side. Such a pity that those people cannot conduct themselves in a more dignified manner. Thank you for those that offer their help.

Hi Karis Yes Forks over Knives is a documentary about eating a plant based diert . I highly recommend it. I have found a surgeon and dietician but they are all for the meat based diet. I am thinking to do what others suggested in doing a vegetarian diet for the first while and switch to vegan for long term.
