Foot surgery and in need of exercise suggestions
Howdy all!
Last week I had a surprise surgery to remove some more cancer off of the foot, and now my normal exercise routine is not an option for a while. Anyone out there happen to have a genius suggestion of exercise that does not involve the use of the right foot? I also had a bunch taken off the shoulders and neck, and although that will heal much faster I am a little stuck... anything that causes friction in that area or a lot of strain is a no go for the moment.
At the start of the break I was doing awesome too... lost several pounds despite it being the holiday season. Since this, packing the weight on. Time to adjust!
Thanks in advance for suggestions, HT

What did your surgeon/doctor suggest?
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I think you need to treat it like an injury. Let it heal first. Then start back on your exercise routine a little bit at a time.
You could change your calorie intake while you are healing. Sedentary people don't need as many calories.
Good luck. I hope you heal quickly.
Although I would have to check to confirm- probably not. I have an open wound on the foot and a gajillion scabs on the shoulders. Pretty sure if somebody saw me in the pool right now they would be quite concerned that I was spreading some nasty contagious stuff around anyway. And the chlorine would probably sting like the dickens too. Thanks for the thought though- the foot could have handled moving around in the water otherwise, same with the shoulders.

Hey girl!
Geez... you just can't catch a break, can you? I hope you're healing nicely.
I hate to say it, but I have to agree that you probably would do better to concentrate on healing right now. With you having so many different areas that need to heal at once, your body probably just needs time to do its thing. About the only thing I can think of that might work for cardio would be using a stationary bike, if you have access to one.
Feel better soon, friend!
I know I probably should heal, but DAMN I am going crazy just sitting around! Who the heck gets melanoma on the bottom of your foot anyway, wtf? Tried a stationary bike and it hurt the foot too much- got a crater on the instep area so flexing the foot is not so happy at the moment. On a positive note, prior to vsg I never wanted to exercise so what a 180 in a year :)

This problem is similar to the one I had earlier this year when I was told that I had a stress fracture in my right foot.
No walking, etc, but walking in shallow end of a pool was OK -- I looked at these plastic-y thingies that are designed to protect a cast from water, whether it is because the cast-wearing patient wants to take a shower, or to get in a swimming pool. I saw this at a local pharmacy that also sells lots of equipment like canes, bedside commodes, etc etc.
Turns out that the foot was very likely not ever fractured! So I am now in physical therapy and increasing my walking, which makes me very happy... (they are telling me now that it is osteoarthritis).
My point is that maybe there is a way that you could get into a pool without exposing the wound on your foot to water...
Take care of yourself. This does feel like a setback, I know, but it sounds like a relatively small wound, and i bet you get back to your usual exercise routine soon!
Oh! the other thing I tried during the "stress-fracture" phase of my foot adventure was a "chair yoga"video! Not aerobic, but a surprisingly pleasant and do-able workout...I also went to a "Silver Sneakers" class at my gym, and these classes can be modified to be done while sitting. I did that. Loved it. It helped me a lot. I recommend it. I actually broke a sweat and raised my heart rate. There is also somethng called "Sit and Be Fit" -- where obviously, weight bearing in the feet is very limited...
Chair Yoga- cool beans, looking that up now. Thanks for the suggestion!
