Cookbook recommendations?

DH and I are heading out to the mall to see what kind of cookbooks I can find. Which ones do you use? I would like to find something that I can see the serving sizes for myself, DH, and my midget girls. (I'm VERY lucky. They're almost 8 and 2 and NOT picky eaters.)

Thanks!

Honestly I think your better bet is online. There are tons of sites for recipes online and many of them give you the breakdown. I have heard that Weight Loss Surgery Cooking for Dummies is pretty good.

One book I use is The 17 Day Diet Cookbook (not for portion control, but it is full of low carb high protein ideas.)

I like any of the Paleo/Primal cookbooks as they are high protein/minimal carb/gluten free, but there's plenty available online.

I follow www.paleomg.com it's a blog based on the paleo diet but has many recipes that are very simply adjusted to fit within the WLS requirements. Next month the blog author is releasing a cookbook called, OMG that's Paleo? by Juli Bauer.

Other than that book, I'm not really familiar with any other healthy cookbooks, as I'm a pretty good cook (my mother was a chef) and I can adjust a lot of my old recipes to be WLS-friendly.

BTW, one of PaleOMG.com's recipe posts today is Breakfast Bacon and Maple Meatballs.... yum! Recipe:

Ingredients:
1lb breakfast sausage (no sugar added)
1 sweet potato
4oz mushrooms
1/2 yellow onion
2 tablespoons sf maple syrup
5-6 slices of bacon (I would personally use double smoked pepper bacon)
1 minced garlic clove
salt/pepper to taste

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Place bacon slices in a pan over medium heat. Cook on both sides until crispy, place on a paper towel to cool, then dice up into small pieces.
3. Finely shred sweet potato, onion and mushrooms in food processor.
4. Combine sweet potato, onion and mushrooms with breakfast sausage, maple syrup, minced garlic, diced bacon and salt/pepper in a large bowl. Mix well with hands.
5. Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and start forming meatballs.
6. Using an ice cream scoop so they are uniform in size, scoop up mixture, then roll out in your hands and place on the baking sheet. Repeat until ingredients are gone.
7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until meatballs are golden brown and completely cooked through.

As a side note... this is a great recipe for sneaking in extra protein powder ;)

It kind of depends on what kind of cook you are (adventurous, follow recipes exactly, etc.), and if you are primarily looking for meat or veggies or both.  I have one Dana Carpenter book, which is good.  But so much of low carb is meat, that just about any cookbook with a good meat section will work.  Look for one that has the nutritional info in it, and then just adjust your serving size accordingly.

I think the Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks now have nutritional info -- but to me, that's the key. There are loads of low carb books out there - I suggest you look on amazon and read some of the reviews before you go.

The University Hosptial here just hired a well-known nutritionist who has authored several cookbooks for bariatric patients, but many of the reviews were not good because there were too many "sweet" recipes.  Her name is Margaret Furtado, so if you want a variety of foods, including some sweets, then take a look at her books.

Of course, there's always "Fifty Shades of Chicken" (a very funny parody cookbook with only chicken recipes)!

Thanks everyone! I like having recipes that I can interchange a few things here and there. I have a BHG cook book that my mother in law gave me almost 10 years ago. I wasn't able to find anything good, so I'm going to follow some advice on here and look them up. I may be able to print them out and just keep them in a binder for easy finding.
