"Carb Sensitive" can include.....

- One who does well in WL with a lower carb diet

- One who got obese consuming lots of sugar

- An obese vegetarian

- And for those that believe blood type might have something to do with carbohydrates

- Metabolism plays in there somewhere

For me it was obvious when I attempted Adkins/Southbeach type diets with restricted carbs. I just never did it right and didn't commit and educate myself to it as well as had quantity and frequency issues (among others.....I was a mess)

It is my observation at near 4 years out and a student of this whole process that "Most" obese people have some sort of carb issues. "Most" that have post VSG issues admit to carbs being the culprit as well as slipping in the commitment and compliance department.

WOW Frisco, I had never heard the blood type thing.  Looked it up and there is tons of info.  Looked up my blood type and there was me in writing.  I do good on meat and only lose when I avoid wheat/grain products.  My whole family including children are the same and we all have the same major issues.  It was interesting reading.

Thanks for your answer, Frisco. My need to completely avoid most of the grocery store fits into your carb sensitive groupings, while my body's violent reaction to most forms of meat fits into the blood type thing. (Looked it up - he says I'm a natural vegetarian)

I chose VSG because I was pretty much always hungry (physically - shaking, sweating, stomach hurting), had no "full" switch at all and wanted the option of occasional use of NSAIDs for my arthritis/chronic bursitis/sciatica/migraines. I knew WHAT to eat, and generally stayed within those foods (repeated bouts of food poisoning-like symptoms will help with that) but I had no "off" switch, so portion slippage was a huge problem. (I was a mess too)

I've come to eat basically the same as before EXCEPT that I weigh or measure pretty much every bite, keep my calories at 800 or less, my protein at 80g or better, and completely avoid processed carbs.

So I have been on another forum where this was discussed tonight.

Now,just for interest sake, how many carbs do you eat in maintanance?

Im getting there and every now and then do carbs on purpose (sweetpotato) but mostly I then fall short on proteins.

And their will always be the pro carbs versus the low carbs! its been around much longer than the sleeve.40 carbs is moderate for weight loss IMHO.But that doesnt allow for junk, which people often try to justify!

So,no donuts!....me being the carb nazi...lol

I think someone is only a "Carb Nazi" if they go around judging other people for their level of carbs, whatever those levels might be.  People should feel free to follow whatever plan their surgeon/nutritionist recommends as long as it's working for them.  All of us are different and have different needs.

40-70 grams isn't that big of a difference in the grand scheme of things.  My plan is 30 carbs (from dairy, fruits, seasonings, etc), but that doesn't include the carbs from "free veggies" like lettuce, cukes, celery, tomatoes, etc. that I'm allowed.  So in reality, I'm probably closer to 70 grams. It's working for me at this time.  Will it always?  Only time will tell.

From this site, I have it pounded in my head to keep my carbs under 40. I do understand someone saying carb nazi only by the fact that the newbies come here to learn what works and it is such a hot topic that being under 40 seems to drill in our heads. It seems like a lot of surgeons do not have specifications for carbs.

At this moment, everything seems high to me with the amount of food I can actually eat so I try to stay under. I get irritated when I have to go over.  However, I have to sacrifice that to get in my protein at my early stage of three weeks out. I read a few posts that have judged people for their plan. What works for one may not work for another.

Carb Nazi or not! Can anyone really argue with what you've accomplished? Granted I like to test boundaries and there are days I go over my 40 and I even had one day this week that was almost 70, but those are rare. You are at the top of the success curve, everyone should take a page out of your book.

Hey Keith.....
It's not about me.... It's about getting out of WLS what you want.... We all have similar wants, but they do vary. I been doing this a while now and the hardest part is to see someone that doesn't get what they wanted. Are there different ways for different people...Yes
Does there seem to be a way that most people do well... Yes... It's very obvious if you look around.
What I did was nothing special....I'm a non conformist that conformed because this was the one thing I couldn't get straight all my life. I was a "Super Morbidly Obese" failure.
When something works for you.... And you wish others the same.... You share.
My position has always been.... Lose the weight first.... Than deviate and find your tolerances.
Carbs.... In maintainance...has been much more than I thought it would be for me. Others may be more or some less. But, I'm playing with an at goal weight.
This last week I ate... Rice, hash browns, candy, cookies, Doritos .... All in controlled amounts. Which I couldn't do in WL (I tried)
I eat in a self developed reverse pyramid ..... 3-2-1
3 parts protein, two parts veggies, one part carbs. This works for me and I eat everything.
Maintaining a weight is much easier than losing regain and Initial WL is much easier than maintenance.

This exactly! It's how I eat now. Works really well - except I'm not at the eat everything point yet. I still need to have some limitations, but that is a personal choice.

I love how you put it about maintaining vs losing regain and that WL is easier than maintenance. Heck, I think maintenance is WAY harder than weight loss. Following rules like Dr. C's plan during WL was so easy compared to finding my way around how many carbs, cals, etc... in maintenance. Almost there, though. I now know that I do really well on 80 - 100 carbs per day - give or take. Now I've got to really figure out the calories!

I'm also going to say, yep, it's about getting what we want out of WLS. I chose a good surgeon with a good plan and then followed the path of successful vets. It's really up to each one of us what we get out of it. I wanted to the absolute most I could get, so I abandoned a truck load of my previously held beliefs and followed a plan that was proven to work. It worked so that's what I recommend. What else could I do?
