Carb Nazi..... Really?????
It always makes me shake my head in wonder when people get attacked for offering advice when they are asked for it. I can only offer that which I already have and what I have is my experience. My research, doctor and nutritionist as well as personal life experience all tell me that same thing; carbs are not my friends. I am not talking about carbs from veggies, or berries or even some lower carb fruit. I have even been knows to have some sweet potato with skin in maintenance. I have had dark chocolate and many other things that have more carbs but are healthy for me in maintenance. However, I know, that carbs are not great for weight loss and if you know something different and want live your truth, more power to you. I want everyone to succeed and I offer my best advice, and yes, I really do believe that most people have a much better chance of reaching goal on a low carb diet. So it makes perfect sense that that is the advice that I give. If you are following a different diet and believe in it, I support you and want you to have all of your dreams come true. It is silly to think that if you don't lose weight, I somehow win. Win what exactly? I know my truth and my truth works for me, it mirrors my idea of what reality looks like, but my success is in no way determined by your failure. I repeat succeed any way you want to, eat carbs, or don't, bet WLS or don't, get any type of surgery or don't. We are all adults and we all have our own path, I support you in your journey and when asked, I give you my best advice. After all, what else can I possibly do?
well i hate the term "nazi" in anything (even though its a great Scrabble word). So lets talk about carb extremists or whatever.
I don't know if its true that some people are more carb sensitive than others (though it sure seems that way) but I do know that I never would have lost 125 lbs without keeping carbs under 40 and would not have maintained it for two years without keeping carbs under 65 or so. Dr. C says its really hard to name a carb limit for maintentenance but he said maybe 80. All I know is I just have to turn down pasta , rice, bread and potatoes. and ya know what, its not that hard. Diane
Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes and some sweets are what got me to where I was postop. It makes complete sense to me to avoid them in order to throw my weight gain into full reverse and hack my way down to a healthy goal weight.
Just to be a pain in the ass -- and it REALLY doesn't matter to me what others do if they are happy with it and their weight loss!! Having said that, my doctor doesn't advocate extremely low carbs and in fact talks about the need for energy from good carbs. He does not agree that anyone should eat between 20 and 40 carbs -- thinks it's too low. His rules are 3 meals a day, eat protein first, no drinking for 15 minutes before and 1 hour after eating and starting @ 6-800 cals and at my point getting in 800 -1000 cals. AND NO GRAZING. My metabolism before surgery sucked and I am 62 years old so -- I figured I would lose more slowly -- never happened following my doctors rules. I could be on maintenance according to my surgeon and PCP -- but I am choosing to continue loosing. Just thought I'd let anyone who wants another avenue to know it exists and you can be successful doing it. Thanks
When I first started reading this forum I did get the impression some had a " carb phobia." It seemed to me that a few treated all carbs the same and a bad thing. I do get my carbs from fruit , veggies and a little dairy. I do avoid the "bad carbs" from concentrated sweets, white bread, white starchy potatoes, rice and pasta. I do follow the lean meat, whole grains , fruit and veggies- a well balanced diet . My surgeon was not big on limiting carbs . He is more about protein first and following a well balanced diet, taking vitamins and getting some exercise. I get bored with only meat and cheese so I will rotate my food around. Get tired of protein shakes I will take a break for a few weeks and start back on them. I have added a low carb, high fiber wrap for lunch. I can only eat half the wrap but great to go with chicken salad, shredded chicken breast, etc. I find I do better with a little fiber in my diet.
