Is Chia seeds a good source for protein?
I'm struggling with getting my protein in. I'm looking for new sources that I can easily add. I saw a post about chia seeds in another forum. Thoughts from VSGers?
I just googled the nutrition values on it. Here is what I found.
Not much protein in it at all.
Serving Size: 1 tablespoon or about 10 grams (dry seeds)
Servings per container: about 44
Every gelled 1 tbsp of MySeeds Chia makes 9 tbsp of chia gel.
Calories per serving: 68
Total Fat/Oils 4.5 g (6% Daily value)
The oil in MySeeds is the healthy Omega-3 oil, most often found in fish such as salmon and cod-liver.
Saturated fat
I don't think Chia seeds have a whole lot of protein, but they do seem to have a lot of other goodies in them. I'm sure adding that will be good for you.
Protein is something I have never had trouble getting in. My main sources are
- Premier Protein shakes (30g) protein, 1g sugar, 160 cals
- Chicken, turkey and pork both have a ton of protein per oz and are low in calories...I mix them with cheese to make them more interesting
- Greek yogurt - I usually use the plain and add my own SF flavors or I just found the Dannon Light & Fit with 80 calories and I think 12g of protein and the carbs are like 8g which is WAY lower than any of the others that are already flavored.
- Cheeses have good protein and are low in carbs..you just have to watch portions as far as calories on some.
- Pure Protein bars - 20g protein, 190 calories and much lower carb than most of the other protein bars out there. I've also heard that Quest bars are good, lots of variety, but I haven't checked those out.
You are welcome to find me on myfitnesspal.com and check out my diary. I'm NadurraDeb there too. I'm always looking for food ideas and that is a great place to find them. Hope that helps!
