Turnip Fries

I thought I was pretty vegetable savvy and had tried or at least knew what most vegetables are but I guess I have never had a turnip. I know I have had turnip greens but never a turnip. I just ran across this recipe on YouTube, I piqued my interest and I thought I would share. I turns out that 1 cup (more than we can or should eat especially if we eat protein first) of cubed turnips has 8 grams of carbs (3g of which are fiber so if you are doing the net carb thing that makes them 5g). Below is the link to the nutrition profile followed by the recipe. I will be trying these this week. I am not saying these fit into your plan, it is up to you to decide if they fit in your plan but if you at 3 oz of lean protein and 1 ounce of these you would be under 2g of carbs (1g if doing the net carb thing). BTW that does not include everything else she includes in the recipe you will have to do the math on that yourself.

That's fine if you are frying the turnips in air.

But the video shows the gal adding flour to the turnips and frying them in oil. So you have to add in those carb and fat grams when deciding if this fits into your meal plan.

I found a recipe for turnip fries that used parmesan cheese instead of flour and a serving had 11 g of carbs and 2-3 g of protein and 2-3 g of fat. So it's not something I'd be eating during the losing phase and, in the maintenance phase, I'd rather eat 5 real french fries and be done with it than fry up a turnip. Have you ever eaten a turnip? I have and I wasn't too impressed with the taste. Or the smell. (Now, if you like turnips, that's a different story.)

I'm the kind of person who would rather have one bite of the real thing than 10 bites of some faked up substitute that I had to hold my nose to get down.

I do the same thing with celery root, I'll try turnips. it's about the same amount of calories and carbs..  I have the recipe in my archives on my profile.  I really like it.  I bake mine so the calories are quite low.

Not a fan of turnips, but I bought some jicama today and I am going to slice it thin and bake in a slow oven until they are crisp.  It works like a dehydrator.

Have you done this before?  I could never get mine to crisp -- so please let me know how they turn out!  I kind of just like jicama raw!

No, I have never, it is an experiment.  I'll let you know how they turn out.

Well my husband wasn't very impressed with them.  He asked "what's that stuff on the tray on the stove,"  with a grimace on his face!  They didn't get crispy, more like leathery.  I also put too much spicy seasoning on them.  Not worth the effort.

I have tried frying turnips a few types, and have never been successful.  It was a fairly common Atkins dish (along with cauliflower rice -- another failure in my taste world!) so I saw many variations.

Although - on the cauliflower front -- sliced it very thin and had very small florets.  Egg white wash, dredge in pecorino romano and roast -- that results in a tasty, fairly crispy treat -- except I could eat the entire head of cauliflower then!  Of course I could eat anything dredged in pecorino romano and baked til crispy!

I used to make fries out of parsnips. I sliced them length wise, sprayed them with the "butter" spray, baked them (I can't remember how long) and salted lightly. They weren't bad. At least things like these won't trigger carb cravings like regular fries. good luck trying these and let us know how they are.
