Gallbladder

I am pre-op, and discussed with my surgeon about getting my gallbladder out at the same time as the VSG surgery.  I had an ultrasound done of my abdomen and organs and there was a gallstone in my gallbladder.  I have lots of heartburn and some GERD already, and my surgeon thinks that I could have gallbladder problems down the line...might as well take it out during the VSG surgery.

I have also read on OH about people getting WLS and then about a year later needing the gallbladder out.

Please share your thoughts and experiences - thanks!

Had VSG in June, Gallbladder out in OCT.  Had a history of a "sluggy" gallbladder before VSG but because I wasn't symptomatic the surgeries couldn't be done at the same time.

Remember the surgeons hands might be tied by what Insurance says he can do.

I had both out together - had GB attacks for about 6 months pre-op and just held off so I could get both together.

They found I had gallstones during my ultrasound as well and decided to take the gallbladder out at the same time as my VSG.  I think that's the best situation so you don't have to go back again.  I only stayed overnight in the hospital.  Just another hole or two in your stomach.

One thing I read online was that having it out can cause one to gain weight!  Is that true?  Do we need the gallbladder much?

DO IT!   i had the pre-op ultrasound done too.. turns out.. i also had gallstones(which i didn't know about) and my dr removed it during my sleeve surgery as well. why not under twice if you don't have to?  he said that a lot of people develop gallstones from the quick weightloss.. so it was better to kill two birds with one stone.  a few people in my support group had to have theirs removed months after getting bariatric surgery.

My opinion, take both out at the same time. It's not a major surgery compared to vsg. If you trust your surgeon, follow his advice!

Honestly, I am a little worried about my gallbladder. I don't have any issues but I have already been through WLS twice, so I do not want another surgery....EVER. My doctor prescribed me ursodiol to prevent gallstones. I am taking it faithfully.

I am 3 months out and am now having gallbladder issues. If your surgeon is willing to take it out when you have your sleeve......I say do it.

Hi all! I had my gallbladder taken out prior to my vsg. I have had nothing but problems. I sware, I would try some of those nasty oily flushes, and basically anything to not have to have it removed. I ended up with acute pancreatitis so it had to come out.
I would research before doing it.
Boy, do I miss mine.
Good luck!
