Pizza Day & The Down Side to Eating Carbs

OK, I knew this day was coming all week long. Pizza thank you party from the bosses. I debated how to handle it all week long. Should I bring my own food and just be a pain in the ass, should I ask them to get me a salad, should I skip it all together, or should I just eat a slice and be a team player. I opted for the latter and before everyone jumps on the beat up on Keith for eating carbs bandwagon, once I decided to do it, I planned for it. I ate very low carb today until Pizza time and I plan to eat very low carb for the rest of the day. That being said, even planning for it might not be a good idea. You see, I just ate one not even whole slice of Pizza which had about the same number of carbs as I get in a day. Right now I am sitting at 34 carbs for the day and only 2 of them are fiber.

So what was the outcome?  I feel very very very hungry right now even though I can physically feel that the the 3/4 slice of pizza that I actually swallowed has me at full. When we eat our normal meal (even when it has some carbs) we are getting them in moderation. Plus we are not eating in a way that spikes our blood sugar. Right now mine is spiked, my face is flushed and I feel gross. I wish I had a glucose tester with me right now I would love to see what it is right now and again in 2 hours. My brain is sending out eat signals like there is no tomorrow.  I will use will power to overcome this, but this is a warning to all of you who are a couple months out and you think you can handle any eating situation. You probably can, but do you really want to? From my perspective  right now the answer to that is no. I will be curious to see what shows up on the scale tomorrow and Sunday. I don't think the slice will have any impact as calorie wise I am in check. I am just concerned that my body will stop burning fat because my insulin levels must be up as well.

I had Pizza last night....well about a half a slice...   dont know my boughie size but I still cannot eat an entire slice ( nearly 7 months post-op)

Carbs, schmarbs... even if I had, I wouldnt worry about it...  an OCCASIONAL day of going over your numbers isnt going to do much if anything to hurt and sometimes it teaches us a bigger lesson...  like in this case, for you it wasnt even that good so next time you are faced with the pizza party issue you will likely make a different decision and not be stuck with the woulda, coulda, shouldas...

I am not as concerned about the number as the concentration of carbs in the one slice of pizza and how I feel right now. I feel full and hungry at the same time. This is what got me fat. This exact feeling. I could come home from dinner and have a snack because even though I logically knew I was full I felt hungry. I think that concentration of carbs and the resulting blood sugar/insulin response are a huge problem for me. I can feel it right now.

Sometimes you have to revisit those feelings to refocus on eating right.  A reminder of how crappy refined carbs make you feel, is just what is needed to give you extra incentive to get back on track.

I bet your body will kick in and burn it off quickly.

I have had pizza a few times.  1 slice and I am done.  I like being able to have normal things occasionally.  I don't want to live in a world without pizza, lol.

Yeah I think so too and I wouldn't be surprised to see a drop in the scale. The resulting hunger is what has me a bit worried right now.

I'm right there with you Keith.  Carbs for me just trigger my carb cravings even more.  Speaking for myself, that is why I am more successful when I limit my carbs, preferably 20-30 grams a day and most of those carbs come from milk in my coffee or veggies.

I'm sure the slice of pizza won't reflect on the scale if the rest of your day is good.  Thanks for this post!

I'm not worried about the scale really, in fact I think it will go down. I have been all over the place lately. I haven't really had any triggers until now. Maybe a small one from popcorn, but this one is rough. I really want to go eat more even though I am full. I have had high carb days when I experimented with carb cycling, but those carbs did not come from bread like these or if they came from something bread-like such as a whole wheat or seed cracker or oatmeal, they were high-fiber/slow digesting carbs.

At least you couldn't eat the whole pizza. I used to. That's why I'm so fat. LOL

Once every 7 months isn't going to kill you. But since you feel so bad, I bet you won't do it again.

Yeah, I am not worried about the once in a while/occassional carb spike as a whole, I am concerned about the hunger I feel when I am full. I am not so sure I wouldn't do it again, I don't learn all that well.

I am a bit dissappointed in the resulting hunger. I had hopped that would go away with surgery. Guess I will just have to live with it and keep it in check.
