Honestly...do you miss eating the way you used to?
Hello everybody. I am about 85% sure I am going to have VSG. The only thing that makes me second guess my decision is I am having a hard time wrapping my head around what my relationship to food will be like afterwards. Feels a little like I'm gonig to have say goodbye to my best friend. Will I regret not being able to eat the way I have? Will I miss cake? Brownies? Cookies? Hamburgers and Fries? Pizza? How much will I miss these things? Will feel like an outsider at functions in which everyone is enjoying all the food and I'm not?
Any input you have will be greatly appreciated!:)
I was so desparate before surgery this was not a worry so much for me. But, I can say how shocked I was at eating post op. It is nothing like a "diet". I felt just as "good" from eating after surgery as before. It is so hard to relate to it unless you are post op. You will not miss food in the way that you think. The first few weeks out I missed having "meals" per se, but once I was through the first six weeks and could have most anything and thus small meals it was not a problem. I have always dealt with the sugar demon- that has not gone away due to surgery.

I too struggles sometimes with this, though mostly not. If I'm at a function family or whatever and I feel strongly that I should have something I take a bite. It takes care of "itch" and I move on. No fooling this has changed my life, but where I'm taking "food" out the function or picture I'm adding new things. My immediate family are the strange ones, so at our last function I told them to look at me, not my plate. Though I fill up a small plate there was no way I could eat it, but I had a little bite of most everything. They took my advice and the evening was great fun, and they were shocked that I'm getting tiny (I don't see tiny in the mirror). I have no regrets and wish I'd done this sooner. Best of Luck!
Honestly? Sometimes I wish I could eat more, because whatever it is tastes good, but I don't, I can't...do I miss the cake, brownies, burgers & fries? Not one single bit. I fully enjoy everything I eat and it makes me feel even better to choose to eat "on plan" Remember, this is ALL about choices ~ you can choose the old lifestyle that got you where you are today (or where you were pre-op) ~ or you can choose a new lifestyle that will heal your mind and body.
On the outsider issue ~ nope, I'm never an outsider. Since I don't eat much and everyone else is munching down, I get to talk more...LOL!
Keep researching and asking questions until you feel comfortable about your decision. Check out my website if you want to learn more about the VSG. Good luck in your decision and journey!
