Why shouldn't I be drinking protein shakes anymore?
I can't stand protein drinks myself and I got off of them very soon after surgery. However, if you like them and they are working for you, continue until you feel comfortable switching to all solid protein. Solid protein will keep you full longer, it is totally natural, well sorta, and has nutrients that you need.
Take it slow with solid protein, it can be hard to digest. You will find what works for you, it just takes time to get it figured out.

save yourself from beneprotein, most do not like it and many cannot tolerate it. I also find it very fluffy. just get a plain flavored protein powder from your favorite place - i like unjury and abouttime
doctors motivations always allude me, they always say 'do this' and never really explain why. it's frustrating.
I guess every surgeon is different. I am 4.5 months post op and my surgeon said that even her 5 year patients still drink at least 1 protein shake a day so I am not going to get any advice from her to stop drinking shakes. I drink 2 a day, that gets me to 52 grams of protein and what I eat for the rest of the day makes me get between 80-100 grams.
Good luck,
Jessica

Over a year out and I still have a protein drink every morning for breakfast. Mind you, I buy a really good quality one that is plant based, gluten free, soy free, dairy free and gives me tons of plant enzymes. I would be lost without it. I love the simplicity of getting fluid and protein and energy first thing in the morning. My doc says it is fine.
The journey is about learning how to eat again, in a healthy balanced way, and that could be the initiative of your doctor. Learning to under eat your sleeve and to get back to solids foods is a big part of it. I do understand that, but still choose to have one protein drink a day.
Every plan is different and ultimately, you need to choose what is best and works for you.
Enjoy the journey!

“Not many of us are living at our best. We linger in the lowlands because we are afraid to climb the mountains. The steepness and ruggedness dismay us, and so we stay in the misty valleys and do not learn the mystery of the hills. We do not know what we lose in our self indulgence. What glory awaits us if only we had the courage for the mountain climb. What blessing we should find if only we would move to the uplands of God.? JRM

Well, I admit to being prejudiced about protein shakes because I think our goal as people with food issues is to learn how to manage real food..BUT that being said, my food therapist made my head explode the other day when she said she's seen research indicating that WLS patients who continue to use protein shakes have better long-term outcomes. Don't ask me about the origin, quality etc. of the research. I did a quick google the other night and nothing popped up.
