B12 is high... from the shot or the juice or both?

I went in today for a follow-up appointment and my doc (general, not bariatric) said my labs came back with high B12.  I was pretty darn shocked, because I rarely remember to take my sublingual b12.  I had only 1 shot about 2 months prior to the labs.  Is that close enough to skew it?  Could it be from the veggie juice I drink daily now?  It is not horrible high, but previous to this set of labs I was either at the low end of normal or just a little low.  I have to admit that I am not well educated about food sources of B12.  The only relatively recent change I have made is juicing daily, so that is why I suspect that.

Any ideas out there?

Hmmm... did you go over the diet with him and ask what could have caused it?

Mine was off the charts high because I was taking it daily, apparently I only need it weekly. They weren't too concerned though, just told me to lay off the tablets ;)

High is not bad. You expel what you don't use. 2 months isn't enough to skew it. Might be something in your diet.

I had my 18 month follow up a few weeks ago.  My labs came back with a B-12 of 1589. which is quite high too.  I was just told to stop taking the weekly sub-lingual B-12, but otherwise they didn't seem concerned either.

I had been taking mine daily and was cut back to every other day and now down to once a week.  I think they just give us the same instructions as RNY and looks like most of us are getting enough from multi and diet.

High levels of B12 are not toxic, unlike some of the other vitamins that are fat soluble and are stored in your body. Just means that you don't need to supplement, since your body is absorbing it, from your diet. It is positive .

B12 is another one of those where the lab ranges don't really reflect the latest research. (Vitamin D is the other.)

Anything under 2000 is fine and nothing to worry about. Signs of deficiency have been seen as high as 500 especially in older adults. Yet most labs list the range as around 200 to around 1000 (my lab uses 211-911 pg/mL)

OTOH, most VSGers don't have any issues with B12 absorption so there really isn't any need to supplement it unless your labs show you are one of the rare ones (5-10%) who do have an issue.

Thank you everyone.  The only weird thing is that the only supplement that I have taken in months is the 1 b12 shot.  But, it was only a little high so it shouldn't be an issue.  Thank again!

I think its also good to keep in mind that if we consume protein supplements (whether bars or drinks), they are often supplemented as well and can contribute to spikes in various vitamins and minerals.
