Coffee ban

Caffeine can irritate your stomach. I ditched it a month before surgery and started having a cup of black coffee (full caffeine) each morning about 3 months out. My doctor didn't have a problem with it, but more than that... I need my coffee. I only let myself drink it black and I just got used to it. I don't like it with sugar or cream anymore at all LOL

Didn't think it was possible to get used to coffee black when you are a die hard cream and sweetner person.  How long did it take you to get used to it?

I just ONLY drank it black. I refused to allow myself to put anything in it. I hated it at first, but eventually I just got used to it. Now, I hate it with stuff in it. LOL. I'd say a week. I think I only drank 2 sips of it the first time. I LOVE the cinnamon donut house one for Keurig. You can actually taste the flavor without all that crap in it.

Ok, good to read that.  I have tried several times to go cold turkey, but cave within 2 days.  Next time I muster up the motivation, I will set the goal at 7 days and stick to it.  I think I will start tomorrow ;)

How you doing? Stick with it! The first few days are like "what the heck is this!!" but get some nice flavored coffees. If you have a Keurig, my absolute favorite is the Cinnamon Roll by Donut House. It smells amazing! I've learned to taste with my nose a lot :)

Uh, didn't start.  Still on my list though ;)  Waiting for it to be a little warmer in the morning... I crave hot coffee much less in that situation.  I am hoping that it will make it a little easier, or perhaps doing an excellent job of rationalizing why I have not started.

I drank my coffee (2 cups a day) right up until 24 hours before surgery, and had my first post-surgery cup about 5 days out- still drink 2 cups a day- my dr did not have a problem with it - as it was no problem for me.

I had to cut caffeine pre-op, but had decaf everyday. The caffeine thing could be linked to the acid it could produce in the stomach??

I say get a second opinion from another doctor J/K. Find out why your doctor wants you to eliminate coffee and go with it until you are completely healed after surgery. It might be that your doctor wants you to eliminate as much acid in your diet as possible to have an easier recovery. Good luck and stay strong. YOU CAN DO THIS!

I am 3 weeks post op.   I can have decaf.  Heard the caffeine triggers hunger/cravings.

I think your doctor is excessive.  Ask for a second opinion.
