I agree to find another surgeon. But as be binder goes, mine didn't have a vsg area either, they has me follow the RNY program and my surgeon is the one that recommended the vsg to me. And he did an awesome job.

include a breast exam? WHY? This guy doesn't sound right on so many levels. absolutely change your doctor. You want someone who is good at what they do, and does it often, particularly with VSG.

Seems to me what he is saying is that he feels comfortable doing only the RNY and wants to stick with that one surgery. Get another opinion.

I was going to have a lap band, so i went to the first seminar which talked a little about each option (RNY, VSG and LB); then went to the 2nd more informative one on the LB (at which i felt everyone in the room knew more than me about the procedure and after care, and diet). I switched to VSG and was told i didn't have to attend the VSG seminar. I never got a binder on VSG, just tons of stuff at the LB seminar. When I went to pick up my Optifast, I asked for any paperwork on the VSG, and they gave me a little generic brochure. I've been asking questions of the office like crazy, and must admit i get different answers depending on who i'm asking. I asked about the diet post-op, and I was just told to do Atkins. UGH. Atkins to me is just BACON. Meat, meat and more meat. I can just feel my arteries clogging thinking about it.

But i'm going ahead with this surgeon. he's got a good rep and lots of happy patients. My primary doc recommended him. I wish i had more info, but i'm hoping to find what i need in this forum.  That's why i'm here

What everyone else said:  find another surgeon.   You want someone who is good at sleeve surgery and also *****spects your opinion.

Really...breast exam....RUN!!! This guy sounds like a creep. I have never heard of a dr doing a breast exam for wls. I agree with the others. Find a highly recommended dr that will tell you all of your options and let you make your own decision.
Good luck with your search hon.

I need to join the chorus - please find a surgeon that has good reasons for their recommendations and that has experience with your surgery of choice!

I changed surgeons myself, and after both recommended RNY over VSG for me personally, I did go with RNY (severe reflux issues). I wanted to address the breast exam... The surgeon I settled on did require a breast exam in the form of mammogram. He certainly did not do the exam himself. His rationale made sense, however. He had a patient who had undetected breast cancer going into surgery. She had an extremely difficult time getting the nutrition she needed for fighting breast cancer... which she detected only after she lost enough weight in her breasts to detect the lump.

I would totally look for a new surgeon. The one I saw initially was all hot on the lap band. I had done my research, didn't want a foreign object implanted in my body or to deal with 'fills'. RNY almost killed my mom (complications!) and I didn't want a malabsorption issue. I knew what I wanted, found a surgeon that specialized in that, took six months to do the lifestyle changes, nutritional counseling, etc., and am reaping the benefits!! The right surgeon was critical!!

PS I am down 148 pounds (66 pre-op, 82 post-op...) and counting!!

I would try to find another surgeon, but honestly I think the biggest thing is feeling confident in the Nutritionist. They give you the diet info, how much you should lose, and a ton of support (at least here). And we also have to have a breast exam, although not by the surgeon. I actually will probably not meet my surgeon until surgery day, only talk with him on the phone, unless the other Dr comes back from his deployment by my date which has now been pushed back a bit. If you need to stick with him then just go back with all of your research and questions written down and don't let him move you from your position. He's just one of those drs stuck in his ways and VSG is proven so it doesn't really matter what he thinks so long as he does the surgery and the follow ups just the same. Good luck!
