Diabetes post vsg....questions
I was sent home from the hospital off all sugar meds and my sugars started creeping up so they put me on a low dose of metformin which i started. Now my sugars are nearing 200!! Could it be that I'm bouncing back from a low? Has anyone else had this problem? I'm still on full liquids meeting my 60g of protein and 70 oz of water goal but my calories are around 3-400..... IF anyone has any theories I'd appreciated...

Mine were that high in the hospital and they gave me some insulin. I was told to go off all my meds as well. But my sugars have been around 120 fasting and I have added 1 metformin in the am and one pm . They said I might need to increase again for awhile. And will probably be off all meds once weight goes down. Heres hoping. Do you have and endo following your progress? If not you need to get it checked , you don't want it high for to long
I was on 150 units of insulin and metforin before surgery. I stopped everything right after surgery and then they had me add back in the metforin 2 weeks later. Then the numbers were not staying down and I started on insulin again and now 6 months layer and down 69 lbs. I take 30 units before bed. My endo says I may still get off of insulin with more loss. I sure hope so because that is the main reason I had the surgery.

We have to remember that our sleeve is a tool. Many (most) will see an improvement or remission in our comorbidies. I had the idea preop that my sleep apnea would be cured. Postop I was told by my sleep specialist that there was no guarantee of this, that sometimes the sleep apnea goes away and sometimes it doesn.t. I have to be retested when I get to my goal weight to see. Diabetes (type 2) is often related to obesty, but type 1 is not. I am also diabetic, but have never had to take meds. I will always be diabetic regardless of my weight, but I may be "in remission", or have better control when I am thinner. It bothers me that we are promised our comorbidities will just vanish after surgery.Though it is sometimes true it is not always the case, depending on their severity we may just see improvement. I had mild hypertension, and was able to go off meds, but I am waiting till i get a cholesterol test to see what I should do about my statins.
better contol and less meds for our comorbidities is a wonderful thing, even if they do not completely vanish for everyone.

My diabeties went in remission, but my cholesterol actually got worse. Be sure to follow through on checking yours.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually quit taking my statin for a while, but my husband talked me into going back on it. I will be getting a recheck in 3 months.. You just assume all your troubles are weight related, but skinny people have health problems also.
