Other sleeve forums..noticing the trend Frisco referred to growing larger
My husband and I had a conversation about this very thing this morning.
We have a lady in our support group who was sleeved in May and complained about not losing any weight. She then went on to say that she would chew potato chips and spit them out. She also said her mushy food stage was primarily composed of mashed potatoes and potato soup.
WTF kind of eating plan is that? It made me wonder a few things: does her doctor even give her patients a post-op eating plan? And does the doctor require a psych eval?? Something is rotten in Denmark here.
We talked about that for a little bit and we both concluded that we were glad we chose the surgeon we chose to do our sleeve surgeries. He has a conservative, regimented pre-op AND post-op eating plan that emphasizes protein first, always, then non-starchy carbs if you have room. But our surgeon is a bariatric surgery specialist, not a general surgeon who happens to dabble in bariatric surgery from time to time. He's been at this for over 10 years, has operated on thousands and has a team of other health professionals in place at his disposal to make sure his patients are successful once they've had whatever surgery they choose to have. From what you are saying it doesn't sound like this is the case for everyone, which is sad for them. It's almost like they're being set up for failure. :(
Ok, I have a hard time believing a doctor's plan would consist eating potato soup and mash potatoes during their mushy food stage.
It sounds like people are doing their "own plan" and that's why they are not successful. The bottom line is you can't continue the old eating habits and expect to get new results.
i was thinking the same thing...i see so many dr.s being bashed about their plans and this or that and we over look the fact that people lie/interpret things how they want... ESPECIALLY drug addicts, food addicts, alcholics :) :P ::If i suck on this hershey kiss it will melt an technically thats liquid and no longer solid so it wont hurt::: haha :) i didnt...but id be a big fatttttt no pun intended LIAR if i said it didnt cross my mind! The difference is, i DIDNT, even though I DID think about. I know I will battle my fat brain for years to come..and so far im taking it one day at a time...and so far so good on my end. not one morsel has passed my mouth that shouldnt have... i cant promise im getting it all in 100% like i should (the exact protein amt/liquids) but every single day its my main goal, its very HARD for me right now..i have ZERO appetite...the only thing i look forward to is my atkins protein coffee to start my day ..if it was logical id just have that breakfast lunch dinner and snack..but i know i cant :( so i make an egg...i get some cottage cheese...i get some yogurt...and just keep trying to boost my numbers

My doctors plan included mashed potatoes at the mushy stage. In fact he said I could have them thinned on the liquid stage. So you can choose to not believe it, but it is true. I will pull out my book here and list some of the things...
Full Liquid Stage:
Low Fat meat & milkbased soups
Cooked cereals (cream of rice or wheat)
mashed potatoes (thinned with milk)
Pureed vegetables
Unsweetened applesauce
pureed fruits
Sugar Free pudding, jell-o or custard
^^That is straight out of the book I have on my lap.
I did not really follow his plan to a "T". I followed it fairly, but not fully. My last visit, he seemed ecstatic that I was doing so well.
That's interesting! I wasn't allowed even one of those foods on full liquids. In fact I'm still not allowed any of them on purees. When I move on to soft foods I'm allowed cooked non-starchy vegetables and soft fruit, but not any of the rest of that stuff.
I had applesauce once on my mushy stage. I tried jell-o maybe twice. It just wasn't worth it to me. I stuck with my shakes solely until I was able to eat soft foods. I was surprised to see those items in my books as well, but that's the norm that is being given out to people. Granted along with those items I was told plenty of water and protein shakes. I was told to aim for around 60 grams of protein. I was shocked when I went into my doctors office and very proudly told him I was getting 90 grams of protein and he told me to back off the protein. He feels that 60 is sufficient and by normal standards it is. So yeah, people can live in disbelief all they want, but doctors are advising their patients of this.
I will also add, my surgeon is a great doctor. I know from speaking with him that he would not advise his patients to live off those certain items completely, but he is not clear in his written instructions that you shouldn't eat mashed potatoes all day every day. Maybe his hopes are too high and expects people to use their common sense? I don't know. The problem is if my "good" doctor is advising people that those items are ok to eat, even just on occasion, could you imagine what a doctor that doesn't give a crap would do or say? Or not do or not say?
Those were similar to what I could do on my plan, however, the plan did not prescribe to ONLY eat mashed potatoes and potatoe soup. It was simply an option. They recommended shakes, fat free Greek yougurt... things like this with occasional (if desired) mashed potatoes.
