bored with breakfast

VSG on 06/12/13
Quick survey: looking for ideas for breakfast that are really high in protein. I find that things go better if I front load as much protein into my day as possible, but I am getting a bit bored with my shakes and protein coffee. I need to back off from the straight-up fried/scrambled/hard boiled eggs for a little bit because the texture is bothering me at the moment. I tried oatmeal with added protein powder, which was ok, but sorta high in carbs (though manageable in the context of my daily total). It was a welcome switch, though. Looking for other ideas...whatcha got?

Thanks!
Laurie

I eat Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage crumbles with 1/8 cup cheese on them every morning. Tasty! This is the only thing I can think of eating for breakfast because you couldn't pay me enough to eat an egg and I try to stay off the protein shakes!

It comes out to be 126 calories, 17.5g protein, and 1.7 carbs!

I sometimes have shrimp or sardines for breakfast (usually with a couple tablespoons of beans for fiber), or sliced deli meat with some cheese, or something like tuna or chicken salad with a poached egg on top. I figure there's no law that says I absolutely have to stick to traditional North American/European ideas of what constitutes a standard breakfast ;)

I often have leftovers since my servings are so small, so I have a stock of leftover dishes.  I often like to have left over salmon or sea scallops or tilapia for breakfast.  I eat my breakfasts later in the morning because I've time-shifted my meals so my last meal is later in the evening.  It prevents snacking after dinner if dinner is a 8pm (smile).

best wishes,

Carol

I hate to say it but if you want the most amount of protein first thing I gotta go with a protein shake. First for me anyway its the easiest time to drink one. They just seem like something you would have for breakfast. You can do a lot with them so you don't need to get bored with them. The only downside is they all do tend to be sweet and if are wanting something savory you gotta go with something else.

Other things I have done for breakfast are bacon and eggs (max protein around 20 g), ham and eggs (about the same), protein pancakes/crepes (again leaning more toward sweet) but they tend to cramp my stomach or if I add in oatmeal one a higher carb day they do not serve their purpose.

Steak and Egg is always a good one. Eggs are about the best source of natural protein and fat you can ask for. Scrambled eggs with some hot salsa on them is a good way to go. The problem with eggs is that you need to eat 5 of them to get 30g of protein.

Can you eat regular food for breakfast?  Regular is the wrong word, but I'm thinking leftovers.  Maybe some grilled chicken and veggies, soup, etc?  I can't.  I'm a strict only eat breakfast foods for breakfast person.  If you're sick of fried/scrambled/hard boiled eggs, have your tried egg bites?  I make frittatas in my mini muffin pans, bake at 350 for about 12 minutes (that timing could be off) and I put whatever I feel like in them.  Sometimes it's roasted peppers, ham & gruyere, sometimes it's spinach and goat cheese.  I let them cool, then freeze them.  Pop them in the microwave when I'm ready to eat.  I do not like cooking breakfast unless it's the weekend, so this works great for me.

I love making use of dinner leftovers from a night earlier in the week. Breakfast doesn't have to be conventional. Salmon, tilapia, beef tenderloin. All of these make a much better breakfast than oatmeal.

I am into the protein coffee totally - love the simplicity and quick aspect of it. Another idea would be a wrap of sorts. Take some lettuce and wrap a low fat cheese and some deli turkey or baked chicken in it and you have a yummy protein rich breakfast. I also like tuna salad for breakfast on weekends.

I'll just add this... boredom isn't a bad thing.  I've read research that suggests that more choice, and more variety, equals more calories consumed.  Just sayin'....

Laurie - I don't have any fabulous ideas but will tell you what I do that typically gets me to about 35+ grams of protein by 9:00 a.m.

5:00 a.m. - workout

5:45 a.m. - eat something with protein, egg, cheese or a couple slices of canadian bacon

6:00 a.m. - shower

6:45 - drink protein shake on the way to work

8:30 - 9:00 - another protein snack:  sausage bites, string cheese, almonds, yogurt, etc.
