Thinking about it...will it be ok?

Will it be ok in the sense that your stomach can handle it? Most likely because it's a soft food that will move right through you.

However, the goal after surgery is to focus on protein, protein, protein. Mashed potatoes have no nutritional value, just a lot of calories and carbs. You will have very little space for food after surgery, so it's really important to fill it with things that provide a lot of nutritional value... and mashed potatoes do not fit that bill.

Mashed potatoes would not be "ok" for the type of eating plan I am on, but the answers you get to this question may vary depending on what their surgeon's "allow"

you could add unflavored protein powder to the potatoes after they cool a little

It was recommended by my nutritionist and surgeon to do mashed potatoes in that initial soft food stage.  However, when I started to be able to eat more volume and was onto meats and veggies, the potatoes became a very rare thing.  Carbs tend to make you want more carbs.  I still occasionally have them, but just am careful with the volume and frequency.  There are those on here that will tell you never to go there.  But it does vary by plan, what you can tolerate and what your trigger foods are as well.  Just listen to your doctor, nutritionist and most importantly, your body.  I tend to feel very lethargic after carbs, potatoes, sugar, etc...  So to feel my best, I do focus on low sugar, lower carb, protein and veggies.

Blessings on your journey!

“Not many of us are living at our best.  We linger in the lowlands because we are afraid to climb the mountains.  The steepness and ruggedness dismay us, and so we stay in the misty valleys and do not learn the mystery of the hills.  We do not know what we lose in our self indulgence.  What glory awaits us if only we had the courage for the mountain climb.  What blessing we should find if only we would move to the uplands of God.?  JRM

Same here. My plan included it early on in soft food stage (clean).   I followed my plan. It wasn't really part of the plan later.

What does your eating plan call for?  Mine asks us to try to avoid potatoes during that phase, and beyond the weight loss stage to limit them to rare occasions.

My Nut says that mashed potatoes are good for the pureed stage to start with to see how you handle it.

Mashed potatoes were on my pureed diet.  I ate them for a few days but stopped once I could tolerate different types of foods.

To many carbs!  I'd rather eat something with more nutritional substance.

It was allowed during the soft stage for me, not that I could eat that much.

Once in a while I do still have mashed potatoes but very limited to 2-3 tablespoons. I try to focus on other veggies like greens since I want to get a whole bowl of mashed potatoes!

Yes according to your doctor. No according to a low carb diet. Mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and cream of wheat will all keep you out of ketosis which is the primary method of losing weight for us post-op.

Try pureed cauliflower instead. It tastes just as good and it is low carb.
